Homelessness has proven to be a stubborn community issue in Utah, so much so that it was listed as one of Utah’s top ten priorities by the Utah Foundation. This is due to the fact that, according to the Department of Workforce Services, nearly 15,000 people are considered homeless (continuous homeless for one year) as of 2015. The homeless population, in addition to having no stable home, faces a range of challenges in both their health and social situations. These issues include substance abuse, mental health disorders, criminal records, and extended periods of unemployment. Despite the state providing funding for housing, particularly with House Bill 436 of 2016, these issues will certainly impede the ability of these people to maintain stable housing. For the purpose of the Praxis Lab idea, the focus of this Praxis Lab description will be on the substance abuse problems and mental health disorders the homeless experience. The lab would incorporate students majoring in Health Promotion & Education, Psychology, Sociology, and Health Society & Policy. …show more content…

Nearly a quarter of the homeless face both substance abuse and mental issues, therefore individualized care, while potentially effective in individual cases, will be slow in helping the homeless population as a whole. Sociology students will examine the scope of the homeless population, encompassing issues with poverty, social structure, and deviant behavior. Health Society & Policy students will explore the lifestyle, environmental exposure, and socioeconomic facets of the homeless. Together, these students will have the purpose of creating a more long-term and extensive solution mediated through their research and
