Little is known about the legendary Greek poet Homer, who is attributed to writing the Iliad and the Odyssey. These heroic tales still influence lives today. His world, Ancient Greece, provides the foundation of western civilization.

Not much is known about Homer, but according to Shelmerdine (2007), “Some scholars believe that Homer lived on the island of Khios or that he may have lived in a Greek city near the Aegean Sea. Homer is said to be the son of Epikaste and Telemuchus. According to www.classicalwisdom.com (2013) “Due to some parts in the Odyssey some scholars concluded that Homer may have been a young Sicilian woman” (p.2). Some scholars believe that “Homer” was a name given to many different poets who wrote The Iliad and the Odyssey. According to www.sacklunch.net (n.d) , “One thing that is certain about homer is that he lived considerably before the year 776 B.C” (p.1). According to www.ancientgreece.com (2012), “Before Homer wrote epic poems, he made his living as a court singer and a storyteller” (p.1). Homer was said to be blind because “Homer” was slang for a blind man in Ancient Greece. According to Www.ancientgreece.com (2012) “The Greek alphabet was also introduced around the 8th century so Homer must have been among the first rhapsodies that were literate (p.1).

Although very little is known about the life of Greek poet Homer, credited with being the first to write down the epic stories of The Iliad and The Odyssey, the impact of his tales continue to reverberate through Western culture.

Although we cannot be sure of when Homer lived, we know he played a significant role in the formation of the literature of ancient Greece. Researchers believe that he probably lived somewhere around 8th century BC and was possibly one of the first literate authors. Other theories suggest that he only spoke his epics and they were put into writing by others. Homer’s stories show us the first glimpse of documented information of Greek myth and religion. Most important was the creation of Homer’s writing style named the Homeric epic. He was the first author to write epics and his writing style held strongly as the first major literature of its type in western civilization. Homer is considered a groundbreaking author of his time period because of his reoccurring themes and characteristics, his creation of the epic poem, and his significance to literature.

Homer Plessy was a white man who boarded a train carriage in Louisiana, in 1892, and was kicked out because his blood was one eighth African. Plessy was taken to a police station and charged with the crime, recognized by Louisiana law, of having refused to ride the train in a black only carriage.

Winslow Homer was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1836. One of the people who inspired Homer was his mother. She was an amateur painter and was his first teacher. Homer first job was working for a commercial lithographer. After about two years he was offered a job for Harper’s Weekly but he turned down the job. Homer opened his own studio in New York City. For a short amount of time he had classes at the National Academy of Design, and studied with Frederic Rondel. Homer began creating great oil works with only a year of self-training. Homer’s mother tried to raise money for him to go to Europe to further study, but this did not happen. Instead Harper’s sent him to the American Civil War, where he would go on to sketch mostly everyday camp life and also battle scenes.

Euripides and Homer are said to be two of the four cornerstones of ancient literary education. The former, Euripides, known as one of the great tragedians of classical Athens produced approximately ninety-two plays, but was rejected by most of his contemporaries during his lifetime. Euripides was the first of his time to portray a woman as a sympathetic character and a victim of society. Homer is known as the greatest ancient Greek epic poet. His most famous works being the Iliad and the Odyssey. Both of these ancient authors used strong women in their works.

Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey have been treasured for centuries as outstanding works of poetry and regarded among the greatest works of Greek literature. The Iliad and Odyssey evoke a sense of wonder at the exploits of the heroes while at the same time serving information for Ancient Greeks who look to Homer’s epics as a source of historical and cultural knowledge. Ancient Greeks most likely regarded the description of the hero’s epic adventures and exploits as representation of the cornerstone of their civilization. Homer’s epics recount the story of the unfolding events in weeks leading to the tenth year of the legendary Trojan War and the siege of the city of Troy. Homer was a blind bard i.e a story teller , and a poet whose writings in the Iliad and the Odyssey provide the main source of information regarding the Trojan War.Homer is assumed to have been born on the coast of Asia minor i.e modern day Turkey.Another indication of Homers origins as an Ionian Greek can be adduced from his poems which show that he was familiar with the geography of that region. Providing evidence that Homer was of the region and therefore was familiar with the history of it.

Another historian-storyteller, Homer, shows us that sometimes the best histories are, in essence, the best stories. He also provides an example of oral, or remembered history. While Herodotus was the father of history, it can also be argued that Homer was the father of writing. His epics, The Iliad and The Odyssey, are fictional epics. However, it is apparent that, to some extent, there may be truths within them. Later, Virgil, another great epic poet wrote the Aeneid, which also proved valuable in the study of these ancient Greek cultures.

Homer in both his most famous works the Iliad and The Odyssey weaves poetry based on centuries worth of oral stories handed down and uses a sophisticated style of writing that is still recognized today. The stories described in Homer`s epics swayed the course of Greek histories. Ancient Greek people quoted snippets of his stories while arguing about the ideal ways to live one`s life. His poems governed the sense of morality in one of the most influential societies in the development of mankind. Moreover, the impacts left by this society can be felt even today. Thus, we must understand the teachings of Homeric epics, if we are to better understand the 21st century. His writings, however, seem to divert from the ideals that are taught today.
