10. What is the Honor Code? What kind of actions would constitute a violation of the Honor Code?

The Kelley Honor Code means to me a set of guiding principles by which to prejudge my actions, and fellow academic candidates as we represent the Kelley School of Business and more broadly, the Indiana University. Accepting the code of honor is to conduct myself with a sense of rectitude and integrity. The acceptance of the Kelley Honor Code will require me to analyze my actions to ensure they are in agreement with the principles within the code.

Although Greenburg’s article and Morton’s speech have opposing points-of-view on the impact honor-codes have towards students, both authors provide insightful background and beliefs about the honor-code practices in college campuses.

The honor code is a system that many schools use to establish trust with teachers and students by having students report each other for cheating, plagiarizing, stealing, and getting consequences for violating those codes. I argue that it could be improved. I believe that giving students that much power to control each other isn’t a great idea. It may work in some schools but it could easily be corrupted. If you think about it, many students are broke, a student could easily pay the other student to allow them to cheat or copy. It’s an easy bribe and I'm sure it’s been done. One of the things that really stand out in my tour of Davidson is the Honor Code. I think this is a great discipline that everybody should follow, and it really can benefit the students and faculty.

What exactly is honor? Honor is a sense of integrity and responsibility. Honor is doing what someone believes to be the right thing to do. To some people honor even means putting others before themselves, and doing what is best for everyone in the situation. In the story The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor was faced with a very challenging decision at the end.

Honest. Disciplined. Hardworking. These words or a variation of these words are most commonly used by schools to describe their students. But to have such students, schools have needed guidelines to follow so students could be considered for the values put in place. Anonymous High School is no different. Currently the school possesses no such honor code system but some students do not notice. The rules put out by the school seem to accomplish their goal quite well and there seems to be no reason for establishing any kind of honor code system. No honor code system should be put into place because the school is functioning fine without it and adding it would only complicate things.

I pledge to follow the Honor Code by refraining from lying, stealing, or cheating. I pledge that I have not and will not receive any unauthorized help on any assignment or assessment.

It is stated in the bible that “furthermore, it isn’t good to be ignorant, and whoever rushes into things misses the mark” (Proverbs 19:2). Stating that when humans rush a process, that does not need to be rushed, the end product will not be reached. Another statement from the bible adds “may integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you” (Psalm 25:21). Integrity; doing the right thing when nobody is watching. Indicates that although no other human being might be around it is important to not deceive oneself. The core belief of the Christian worldview is “faith working though love” (Galatians 5:6). Which can be influence this scenario by having love for one another and wanting the best for those around.

As we bring our upbringing, faith commitment, past experience and reflections to bear on everything we do, we now stand back and go to the sources that for Christians should provide the moral insight needed to proceed: (1) Scripture; (2) Tradition; (3) Reason; and (4) Experience. As it is generally believed today that the canon of Scripture was put together through a sincere act of discernment by the Christian community and that it is truly the coming together of the human and the divine, we begin our investigation with Scripture. We will then look at the remaining three: tradition; reason; and experience in light of Scripture.

     Throughout my years at Xavier and beyond I intend to follow the Xavier Honor Code so I can become a cooperative and responsible person. By being a student at Xavier I notice I will have to take responsibility of my actions and faults. In order for Xavier to trust me and to allow me to continue attending their school, I will have to follow their rules and be respectful. Not only should I do these things, but also I have to respect myself in order to respect others. In following the Honor Code at Xavier I will learn more about others, the school, and myself. Almost a decade ago, after I had spent a year of in a discipleship program, I adopted the mission statement: Make the next right decision, and promptly admit when I’m wrong. To me this statement encompasses everything I know about applying Christian ethics to everyday life. Motivated by love, I seek to act in holiness and justice in every choice I make, including admitting promptly when I choose wrong. To make the best decisions possible I apply a biblical perspective, and ethical evaluation toward sound reasoning in recognition of both the spiritual and natural world.
