I think there are a number of ways to look at the hookup culture in colleges around the country. As a college student, I can speak from personal experience because I have been there and done random hookups myself. I have also seen my close friends experiment with different partners and hooking up with people they don’t even know from bars, parties, and social apps like tinder. My own relationship I have been happily in for two years could have resulted in just a random hookup.
I think the article makes many key points about the hookup culture and some solid arguments, however, I would argue that the main reason college students make random hookups is more because of this fitting in and no regrets mentality. Most students just want to go get drunk and have fun during college, and if it means leading to a hookup with that guy or girl they meet at that party or bar, then so be it.

In my opinion, girls hookup because they seek self pleasure, as well as just wanting to feel wanted by somone. There is a problem with committed relationships these days and women often avoid the burden of an untruthful relationship by hooking up and satisfying their own needs. The hookup culture in college is a struggle in which women want truthful relationships while men just want sex with no strings attached. The social justice theory in the hookup culture is that men can hook up with multiple women with a low social cost, being normal, whereas women are often called “sluts” and other crude names. This is in my opinion is gender inequality because when men hook up, they are gaining both social acceptance from friends, as well as, more sexual satisfaction from these encounters than
Across the U.S. college students on a variety of campuses have part taken in what is commonly known as the “hookup culture.” The hookup culture does not always have to include sexual intercourse although it most often does, but it is merely the idea of having physical pleasure with another person outside of an emotional relationship. College students, even at some of America’s most prestigious colleges realize hooking up has completely overthrown the idea of being in an actual relationship. Emily Foxhall a Yale student wrote an article for the Yale Daily News in 2010 stating that the hookup culture is so prevalent on Yale’s campus because students have enough stress to worry about, casual hookups are easy (Foxhall, 2010). The question becomes, is the college hookup culture vital and normal to the college experience or should it be condemned for being harmful to college age persons mentality.
Another important factor in the hookup culture is alcohol and sometimes drugs. The place you are most likely to find these factors is at a party on any college campus. Party oriented students believe that drinking enhances their experiences and improves their personalities (Wade, 2017, p.29). Not all students participate in drinking or drugs and they have felt out of place and judged (Wade, 2017, p.31).
Being a college student myself, it is very easy to relate to and understand Bogle’s arguments about how hooking up can lead to alcohol abuse and sexual assaults. Even if this is true, an outsider 's perspective can vary on whether they believe the argument Bogle presents or not. One example is a potential incoming student who is likely to be ignorant to anything about the hookup culture in college and might not believe Bogle’s argument without any solid facts or statistics. A different example could be a parent of a student may be swayed by the nervousness of the child being away to believe the extreme without any evidence. This is a vast downfall for this article due to the fact there is little proof or real life examples throughout it.
Some of my friends have had one, I have never had one. Some couples are affected by hookups and it causes many relationships to end. Men are actively participating in hookups; however, women especially are more intrigued to hookups because they are “fun” and they don’t have to commit to a long-term relationship. Go to a college campus and ask students about hookups, you will be surprised that is more common than what people might think. In fact, many college students, every day, actively participate in hookups or are introduced to this dominant culture. What’s the cause of the hookups? Why do many students participate in hookups?
Allie Bukatman’s popular press article “The Hook-Up Culture Has Killed The Possibility Of Dating In College,” examines what precisely the hook-up culture is and why it’s not necessarily a good thing. Bukatman focuses on the expectations of the hook-up culture, explanations for this casual sex phenomenon, causes for why commitment is an intimidating thing, and power in relationships, all the while providing her perspective on this matter.
What is hooking up? According to a study in “Hooking Up” by Kathleen Bogle, she notes that hooking up is “when a girl and a guy get together for a physical encounter and don’t necessarily expect anything further” (Bogle 2). Hooking up, which has increased dramatically since the early 2000s, occurs between two young adults, most commonly on college campuses all over the country. While some believe that it is an innocuous pairing between two young adults, I strive to argue that the hook up culture represents a problematic arrangement between two young adults, as it can lead to a depressed psyche, diseases, and create unhealthy interpersonal relationships.
College began as a luxury for the wealthy years ago. But today, there are many people who attend college, so there is much more for the students to engage in. As college has become a normal step in most people’s lives, college students have been labeled into various stereotypes. A popular stereotype about college students states that students party all the time. Media portrays the stereotype that all college students party all the time in both negative and positive ways.
The media has a huge effect on the socialization of gender and can affect others attitudes and behaviors towards the opposite sex. Mass media also has a major role in the process of gender socialization because it bombards individuals with ideas and images of what men and women are supposed to be. For example, magazines that are targeted at women are different than those that seek a male audience. Television also plays a major role in defining gender roles by the way commercials and to shows. Advertisements for an array of products describe men as being strong and masculine while women are portrayed as dependent. What does hooking up mean to me? In the most basic sense, hooking up with someone most likely means that you’re sexually intimate with him or her, yet this intimacy can range from kissing all the way to intercourse. Hooking up is actually an overarching expression that can be used to describe the wide range of sexually intimate acts that you engage in with someone else, but it doesn’t imply monogamy or that you’re in relationship or are even dating this person. The hook up is a term that can take on so many meanings. It has grown from a single interaction between two people into a culture that now defines my generation. The hook up culture is a casual, relaxed alternative to dating that physically acts as intimacy without any of the intimacy part. It is filled with no expectations, no attachments, and no commitment. The
This research paper details the transition of opinion over the years towards the sexual double standard, particularly of repeated instances of “hooking up” and having multiple sporadic partners in college students. It especially focuses on how the double standard has changed in terms of prevalence and the view point that those being interviewed had (whether they were conservative,
College is often referred to as the best years of your life. During these years you get to be more independent, finally have a say in what you want to learn about, and more commonly than not indulge in risky behavior. The definition of risky behavior in the case means underage drinking. Alcohol is a big part of the college experience for many, and for others they do not want anything to do with alcohol. Whether college students choose to indulge in drinking alcohol or not it still can affect them. A student may choose to not go to a party if there is drinking, or they may not choose to go watch a football game at a certain restaurant because it happens to be on one dollar beer night. One place that alcohol is almost guaranteed to be at those is college parties. Many students choose to relax after a long week by going to a party. At these parties alcohol is in abundance, drinking games are played, and for many bad decisions are made. The bad decisions can be costly for the student from a ticket for deciding to drive home, getting a minor in possession if the student is of age to have alcohol, or even getting kicked out of the dorms for being a repeat offender of alcohol in the dorm hall. The root of the majority of parties is always rumored to start in one particular place. That place being fraternities. Fraternities have been seen as the root of all college parties for ages. There are T.V. shows and movies that portray fraternities as just that, the root of college parties.
College is, and will always be, the best time of your life. It’s where you’ll most likely experience your first kiss, your first real heartache, or have sex for the first time. Yes, sex. For most, the college hookup culture can feel so complicated. For some, sex is just “having fun,” while others see it as a “showing of love.” Whatever the reasons, it’s undeniable that sex happens and sex could happen to you. As students and, simply, human beings with raging hormones, you’re naturally drawn to it.
A study published in December of 2014 has shed some light on what could encourage these events in the first place. The study was conducted as a survey with a group of 624 undergraduate students, 54.1% of which were women, the rest men. The statistics record that 92.4% of participants were caucasian and the remaining population was African-American, and approximately 95% of the participants were aged 25 or younger. This information determined that the study group was a representative sample of the student body using information from the Office of Undergraduates at the school. The students were questioned about their familial, individual, and romantic relationships, as well as their experience with sexual assault and their alcohol consumption patterns. By researching the correlations between factors such as home life and hook-up culture, the researchers are able to predict
The “hook up”, a developing phenomenon that has been rapidly growing in adolescents and young adults in the western world for the last decade, which has resulted in a cultural dating shift, an escalation of drugs and alcohol abuse, as well as emotional and physical consequences (). The term “hook up” is known as brief uncommitted sexual between two individuals who are not romantically involved but consensually indulge in sexual activities including kissing, oral sex, penetrative intercourse (Garcia 2012). A hook up more often than not originates from people enjoying a party or club like setting, but can facilitated between individuals who are familiar with one another or are complete strangers (Bogle ). Most hook up scenarios are a series
There’s the obvious fact that schools should be a place of learning and getting an education. However, Kipnis describes her days in college and her relationships with her professors, saying “ We partied together, drank and got high together, slept together. The teachers may have been older and more accomplished, but you didn’t feel they could take advantage of you because of it.” (Kipnis 103). Although her argument here is that professors didn’t have the ability to take power over students, she made the mistake of admitting what kind of activities students and professors did together. Do colleges really want their students to drink and get high in the first place? Although some students may do it either way, it’s definitely not a good idea to allow professors to get involved in that. Professors should act as role models to students: not only are they at a less confusing place in their lives, but they are more educated and accomplished, which is what every student should strive to be. Kipnis doesn’t ever mention how a student’s education could be affected by dating a professor, but it’s clear that it would. “Drinking and getting high” is linked to lower grades and success. And that’s only if feelings don’t come into play. What happens when a professor breaks things off with a student? The student can’t exactly cut all ties with the professor, like what usually happens in an ended
In college some couples peer pressure each other to do things they don’t want to do. He or she may want to stay in to do homework, but the other person may want to attend the popular people party. Peer pressure could affect college students and cause them to be put into bad situations. Being peer pressured all the time could affect the persons education and how they act towards others. He or she may get fed up and tell the person off and that could lead to a big fight. Dating while in college and being peer pressured is not a good
