Hope: A Short Story

I watched the movie 'Hope Floats'. I have seen it several times in the past and I couldn't remember seeing any product placement ads, so I wanted to rewatch it to find out. It turned out that there were several placement ads throughout the movie. It had U-Haul printed moving boxes displayed in a couple of different scenes when Birdee moves back to Texas for several seconds each time that they were shown. At the photo shop where Birdee gets a job, different types of Kodak film packages are shown several times in different scenes for about 5-10 seconds each time. The book Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen is about a man named Nightjohn also called John. John came back from freedom to teach slaves to read and write. He stumbles on a girl named Sarny, Sarny really wants to learn. As the story goes on Sarny learns that hope is very important . In the story, John will do anything to teach Sarny to read and write.

(O-S1)The changes we see in people do not always come from the most suspecting person. The people we think never change can be influenced by just one thing and be changed forever.(O-S2) In A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, the events that occur to the people in the book prove that hope it a factor in the changes of people.(O-S3) In the book the hope that Jefferson ,an unsuspecting character, will be changed by a teacher to see himself as a human and be seen as a true man.

Raft Assignment: Hope published by Andy Nguyen : November 1947 Magda Herzberger was eighteen in 1944, she was forced out of her home in cluj, Romania onto trucks that shipped them into ghettos where they were later deported to concentration camps. She could still remember the sounds of shouting and pounding fist on the front door. Without any warning they were told to take any precious and valuable things they had and be ready for the journey of their lives. She said “on that day I saw my freedom get stripped away from me.”

In the novel, “A Hope in the Unseen” written by Ron Suskind explains the journey of Cedric Jennings from the Inner City to the Ivy League. As a means of survival, having had to attend a high school in one of Washington, D.C’s most dangerous neighborhoods. Cedric Jennings has had to isolate himself from his peers so “he could stay on course and keep his sanity”(Suskind 293) in order  to leave the neighborhood behind and pursue his dream of attending an Ivy League school. When he does reach his dream of attending Brown University, he still holds the idea that isolation is the key of survival. He still holds the idea that their is a battle between himself and his peers based on their different values or academic successes. As a result, conflicts erupts by the fact Cedric won't give up his past and live toward the future or the now. Eventually he realizes that “being alone doesn’t seem to be working”(Suskind 293) anymore.

As shown on the cover page, I did my project on Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer, which was published in 2000, and Say Goodnight, Gracie by Julie Reece Deaver, which was published in 1988. Hope Was Here is about a 16 year old girl, who is being raised by her Aunt Addie, who is a chef. Her mom, Deena deemed hereself unfit to take care of Tulip, who later changed her name to Hope as soon as she turned 12. Hope is a teenage waitress, and her Aunt Addie and she have moved around a lot. The story starts with Addie and Hope just arrived in the small rural town of Mulhoney, Wisconsin, from their last place of employment in New York. Hope spends the summer waitressing at the Welcome Stairways Diner, and Addie and her end up being involved the diner’s owner, who is recovering from leukemia, G.T. Stoops’ political campaign to clean up corruption in the town. Along the way, Addie and Hope both find love, and Hope finds the father figure she has so desperately wanted. While Say Goodnight, Gracie is about a 17-year-old girl, named Morgan Hackett dealing with her best friend, Jimmy’s death. Jimmy and Morgan have known each other their entire lives, and they spend almost all of their free time with each other. Their relationship left little room in their lives for other friends. Surprised by Hope by N.T. Wright is a must read for any Christian looking to expand their understanding of faith. Surprised by Hope gives us a full understanding of salvation as it is revealed in the Bible. This book also tells us how we should act in our lives and in this world as God’s redeemed people. It reveals incredible insight that is important to us because it explains just how crucial our role in this world is. Wright talks about the way things currently are and how they will be with the resurrection and our salvation. The book expands on the Christian mission and what it means to live with hope and faith and attempts to answer the very famous question: What is heaven?

There once lived a beautiful, innocent, and pure maiden named Hope. This girl was filled with love, compassionate, and a sense of happiness that enlivens her whole body. One day, she was gathering water in a nearby river, but then she started to feel like she was being watched. She immediately stopped, and said in her soft voice, "Is anyone there?" She looked around, and all of a sudden, a knight appeared. "Oh my, you startled me", she said with a smile. She kept a content demeanor while looking at the knight, but the knight was not speaking at all. The knight started to walk closer to Hope, but Hope did not expect anything wrong with this.      The movie I decided to watch is called Hope Floats. This is a great movie, and it not only should be about love, but it showed me about life. Do you think you can fix your life and get it back on the right track all on your own? All you have to do is just have to give hope a chance and believe that everything will get better someday. There is always a time in everyone’s life when something horrible happens. Sometimes it something that changes your very course of life in an instant. Throughout the novel Hope Was Here we see characters go through struggles and gain strength to overcome them. In our everyday lives we have struggles that we also have to overcome. In the novel Hope Was Here, one of the characters Braverman has to choose his family or education. The character Addie, faces the struggle of miscarrying three babies. In my life I have struggles and so do the people around me. For instance, my grandma went through the struggle of losing her husband. From this novel it is learned that if there's no struggle there's no strength.

Hope is surprisingly difficult to define and may be expressed in many ways. Overall, I feel that a good definition for hope would be that it is an optimistic and expectant desire that emerges from a stressor. It is a coping mechanism deeply rooted in motivation. It is the opposite of despair and fear as well as the influence that keeps us from succumbing to them. Hope can be identified as a means of perseverance as well as perseverance itself. Hope is the ability to detect even the smallest amount of light in the darkest of places.
