Each year around the world millions of people make a list of their New Year’s Resolutions and hope the new year will bring those changes. For many people they would like to get the promotion they have worked so hard for, or maybe for some people it’s time to settle down and start a family. There are countless amounts of resolutions for people to hope for. For what seems like a lot of Americans today many hope for their “ideal body weight”. In the United States the average body mass index of males is 28.6 while for females it is 28.7 those BMI’s are indicitative of overweight people but not necessarily not obese.(LiveStrong.com). Many Americans find it hard to see themselves as having an ideal body, especially when all we see on TV and magazines is people that are …show more content…
It is a daily struggle for many people, some people are so overweight they become debilitated.
Some of the most common reasons Americans are unhealthy are as follows: poverty, limited access, social/environmental issues, age, and medications. (HealthyEating.com). For Americans that do not make enough money to buy healthy foods for their families it is much cheaper for them to drive up to McDonald’s and order from the dollar menu. It is expensive for people to eat healthy while unhealthy food is cheap and more convenient. In some states it may even be a problem for access, for instance in some states it is more common for certain crops, if that state has a bad year with the crops there might be a lack of that food in the state. Many states get food from outside the United States if anything would happen with transporting there would also be a shortage making it easier to buy other foods that may not be as healthy. As we age our bodies need more vitamins and nutrients, as it is seen in many people as they age their diet becomes poor which puts them at a higher risk for many disease. Many elderly do not have an
Health is very important, it give you the opportunity of have a good quality of life. A country with good health has happy citizens. However, some reports show us how Americans suffer poor health. The health of Americans is worse than the health of citizens in other wealthy countries even though the United States spends more on health care than any other country. Poor health is caused by the bad nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and busy life. At the same time, the USA is full of fast food restaurants. Also, they consume a lot of junk food, for example, they consume soda, fried food, and desserts. As a result, the American lifestyle contributes to being overweight. There are three reasons why Americans have poor health.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These words should sound familiar to most people. They were included in the Declaration of Independence, which was mainly written by Thomas Jefferson. The Declaration announced America’s separation from Britain, tyranny, and the monarchy.
Most Americans do not care enough to take a look at the nutritional values of the food that he or she is consuming. That is why America has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. This is a serious problem because one in every three adults is obese, and one in every six children is obese. There are many factors that go into the regular American diet, but most of those factors are not appealing nor is it healthy. Americans put way too much processed food into their daily diet. Some would say that other countries diets superior the American diet because of nutritional values that it carries. Other countries have proven that an active lifestyle is a huge element in the average weight of the country. There are many things that
Apart from healthcare issue, the country has adopted the fast-moving life style, which has pushed most of our citizens to succumb to obesity as a result of fast foods. In fact, a recent report by the UN has ranked the United States as the most obese country in the world. Parramore (2012) outlines that, “Obesity is currently being considered as a national crisis in the United States and that it contributes 100,000 to 400,000 deaths per year. Statistics at the CDC and Prevention in 2010 indicate that 35.7% of the American adult is obese.” Many input trends exist in the American society, “First and foremost, people are highly used to fried foods, sugary drinks, and processed meats among others. There is also the sedentary lifestyle that has been adopted by many,” (Huffington Post, 2013). In fact, most of us love relaxing without exercise and too much television watching. These are some of the factors that contribute to obesity. The result is health complications problems such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease just to mention but a few. These affect the longevity of life.
To start, we Americans are living unhealthy lifestyles. We are becoming too lazy, like the Romans relying too much on their slaves. We also eat too much junk food and not enough healthy foods like fruits, and vegetables. Studies have shown that about 40% of women in the U.S. are overweight, and most teens are starting to become obese. Today, almost everyone is always watching T.V. or YouTube, and are barely exercising.
Why is America never America? “America never was America to me” is a line repeatedly written in the poem ‘Let America be America Again’ by an African American poet Langston Hughes. This poem was published in 1936, when being African American was one’s greatest sin. African Americans were treated as things that elite whites can own rather than free- willed humans. In this poem, the pain and suffering of colored Americans, who were considered less than humans, is reflected clearly. Despite being written by an African America poet, the poem ‘Let America Be America Again’ does not represent African Americans only. Minority groups including economically disadvantaged whites are represented in this poem. For these people America is not America. It is a sleepless night where dreams are not allowed. They never get freedom in the land of the free. They never get opportunity in the land of opportunities. They never get justice and equality in the land of the justice. America is not America they want to see, and the poet Langston Hughes repeatedly mentions, “America never was America to me”. In 1936, when the poem was first published, being colored immigrant was the same, or even worse than being a murderer, justice was never served, and there was no equality. The privileged elites had all the America to them but to the lower racial groups and immigrants, American dream never existed. Despite the fact that the poem ‘Let America be
America is known for its advanced society and technology, but is also known to be one of the most obese populations. Found in “Down to Earth”, America is one of the most progressive countries to exist; therefore it should be the healthiest (“Obesity in America”). If America is so highly advanced, more advancement needs to be put towards obesity rates. As time goes on, adults and children are having to consequently expand their waistbands because of unhealthy habits. In an article previously discussed, Brown-well states that Americans are at an all-time low in exercising (Murray). By having less motivation to exercise, family health is at stake. Future generations need to be more pressured to keep physically fit for their health. With less motivation for a healthier lifestyle, communities across America will remain obese. According to CBS news, Americans prefer to consume Twinkies over Tofu (“The Blame Game”). With Americans not giving healthier options opportunity, less interest will be put into healthy options. Individuals are focusing on the pleasure of taste than their own well being. Internationally speaking, Americans have one of the strongest societies, but the weakest mindset for healthy living. With stubborn attitudes and continual unhealthy choices, obesity will not only stay but
Certain emotions cannot go unfelt. For me, gratitude and pride rush through my veins at the sound of Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” or the image of Ole Glory against a painted sky. Paul Tsongas once said, “America is hope. It is compassion. It is excellence. It is valor.” The list goes on. Undoubtedly, listing what America isn’t would be much easier.
Hi, today I will be presenting my paper to show how I feel about America and our hope for the future. I think that America can potentially be a better place than it is now, but we have some major work to do. Our country has went downhill in the past few years.
My family has always believed that there is a path set by God for everybody in this world. Personally, I am very religious just like my family. I go to church every weekend and assist with anything for the church. Still, I never believed in the concept that everything is interconnected and happens for a reason. Well, that is, until now.
I believe that becoming a healthy American depends on ones self ;and how people want to see themselves later on down the road . If ones desire is to live longer and enjoy the good ness of life then a good health starts from what is ingested into ones body. However, i dont blame fast food restaurants for this epidemic of obesity and other deseases ; i blame it on the person who makes the choice . In addition a person who makes healthier choices of foods are more leaner more energetic and overall, more healthy internally. Appose to someone who eats with unmeasured precautions are overweight and internally deseased. I blame people who are obese and sick for the choices they decided to make and that they continue to make and for their lack of will
People are trying so hard to chase the American Dream that they forget about their health, which is currently a huge problem in America. It’s such a big problem that people outside the USA has stereotypes about the Americans, e.g. “Fat American” or that all Americans are fat and lazy. When people think about Americans the first things that comes on their minds are,” Americans are the fattest people in the entire world, and they sit around eating bon-bons and fast food all day.” Obesity is getting worse and worse in America, but what is the main reason for that?
According to Alyssa Brown, “51% of adults want to lose weight, [but] barely half as many (25%) say they are seriously working towards that goal. This discrepancy between Americans’ weight-loss desires and behaviors has existed for years”(Brown). According to society, the definition of a healthy person is someone who exercises often and eats healthy foods. Even though people want to be healthy, becoming healthy is a hard task. Surely it is much easier to lay around at home and eat chips than to work out at the gym. Maybe this is why obesity rates are on the rise. A medical study estimates that “75% of the U.S. population will be classified as overweight or obese or obese by the year 2020” (NewsMax). People wonder, what is the solution to this
What makes a person happy? Everyone has their own idea of the possible topics, but there are many reasons of what and why the American people are happy. Recently, in my government class we have been looking into why people around the world are happy. How can American people improve their lifestyle, achieve further greatness. In order for Americans to be happier, I believe the government could improve the policies that will allow the people to find a suitable balance between work and their personal life, also, create ladders of opportunities for people, to gain life satisfaction and life long achievements. This can really improve people's life, because working plenty of hours can impact a person's health, “Work hours may impair personal health, jeopardise safety and increase stress” (NY resource). This means the level
Obesity is such a problem in America because of fast food and how the encourage others to eat there products. A total of 205 million men and 297 million women are diagnosed with obesity. Fast food is not only a big problem but it is also cheap, being cheap is easy. And because it is simple to get with the cost of 5 dollars, people tend to pick a hamburger along with fries rather than a healthy homemade meal. Low income families are also more willing to buy their kids fast food because it's hard to afford the proper meals Families also don't know the proper eating proportions, when ordering a meal don't get the biggest size. This leads to gaining more weight which is something to avoid. Families in America are also busy, when the mom and dad both have to work to support the kids and bills parents often come back home tired
