The meaning of marriage in Hopi (Native American) tribe: Native American cultures are filled with many different tribes, which have their own distinct customs and traditions in which a marriage is held. Just like in Hinduism and Christianity, it is very hard to categorize just one aspect of a wedding to be Native America, because even different tribes have similar common procedures, while also being unique when compared to each other. Most Native Americans believe in A Great spirit- which is a source of all life on earth. Unlike in Hinduism and Christianity, the great spirit doesn't have a body, but it's believed to be a formless power which exists through the entire universe. If a marriage takes place in the Native American formal way, then they are seen to be celebrated with feasts and gatherings. One thing that is very symbolic in all tribes is that Water, which is for cleansing and purification of the body and soul. Before a wedding ceremony takes place the groom and bride are seen washing hands representing the washing away of past sins, evils, and memories of past love. The procedure for this particular tribe marriage is initiated once a young girl reaches the age of adolescence (hits puberty), if and when she decides to marry a boy/man, she gives him an invitation and a certain type of bread (loaf of Gomi). If he accepts the invitation for marriage, then he said to leave a bundle of fine clothes and white buckskin moccasins at the entrance of her door. The young man will have to option to either deny or accept the proposal which is a great thing. After that, the engagement ceremony takes place, which is then represented as occurred by the visited female family members washing the hair of the engaged couple in a single basin, after which their hair is said to be interwoven by a process of entwining which signifies their union as being lifelong, they then walk to the edge of the mesa to pray and witness the rising sun(representing of light and new beginnings). After that, both the groom and bride are said to start from his house to the bride’s house, where they remain until the brides wedding garments are completed. The wedding attire of the bride is apparently hand woven by the groom and any men who wish to participate in the village. The wedding garment is said to contain a large belt, two complete white wedding robes, a white wedding robe which contains red stripes at the bottom and also at the top, a white buckskin moccasins and leggings, a specific string to tie her hair and the whole outfit is said to be wrapped in a reed mat. It is interesting to know that the wedding outfit also will serve as a shroud as these garments are necessary after death for the trip through the underworld.
