Hi Jamuna, thank you for your sharing. I read all our classmates' responses, and I decided to come back to comment your response because you picked one of my favorite's horror movies. I like the way you describe the poster very details. The main colors of the poster are dark gray and black. The little girl wears a white dress, hold a doll, which is Annabella, and carry a lamp. The background is also dark and dull with a house and a tree. That build the movie's story and creates a fear to audiences because that is not a good idea to see a girl on the outside of the house in the midnight. I agree with you that the filmmakers try to reflect the horror shape to the poster, and it works. I do not know I cannot open your link. It maybe dead, I guess.
The essay strives to present the visual analysis of the poster of the movie Scream. The poster of the movies are regarded as important tool for advertising a movie and they play a very important role in informing people about the basic elements of the movie. The posters are meant to perform variety of goals for the movies and thus it is very important for the filmmakers to assure the creation of appropriate poster for their movie (King, 2003). The poster of this movie has been analyzed in the essay by following the four steps of visual analysis framework.
Having Halloween just around the corner the horror genre has been on demand. What is a horror genre? Horror is defined as being “an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust” and genre is defined as being “a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter” according to Oxford Dictionary. Therefore a horror genre is a horror film in one of the many categories in a genre that makes the audience feel fear, shock or disgust. Many of the films that everyone watches today are now called movies. Since scary movies have been requested, Netflix has even added a “Halloween favorites” on its search bar.
This is a representation of the coldness of the character that is behind the window, and is blurred within the fog. The use of mise-en-scene is also used in the background that you can see behind the window which is of a forest. This is determined by the clustered trees that are crowded behind the character at the front. This is a cliche in horror films as it is a setting that a lot of horror films use, as a forest is a place that has a creepy atmosphere when dark and is a vulnerable place to be, as it is unrecognizable to you. The use of lighting is used to silhouette the character, this makes her the main focus of attraction. It also blocks out any view of anything else behind them and therefore forcing the viewer to look at the character. This is effective in asserting the audience that this is a horror film. The last use of mise-en-scene that is used in order to make it more bright and to make it stand out is the use of costume. The use of costume isn't fully focused on this poster but it is helpful in finishing off the full image of the atmosphere that it is trying to create. The T-shirt is dirty and torn, which can represent a struggle that it took for the character to come this way.

In the movie of The Conjuring, in certain instances it foreshadows a witch which is considered as a dark presence. This movie poster is effective in introducing or raising awareness of the way is being presented by telling the readers that this film is based on a true story and by showing readers that it will have a mysterious person in search. In the movie, there is a new family of seven, five daughters and their pet dog that moves into an unfrequented farmhouse which took place in the '70s. Strange things have been happening to the house as well with the family, they call investigators to look at the house to find out why weird things have been happening. The reason for the dark presence, appearance in the house is because someone had hung themselves at the house so unfortunately the house is haunted without the new family members being aware of it. The poster for the movie The Conjuring foreshadows a mysterious dark presence not seen by everyone through the specific placement of the shadow, the color scheme, composition and spatial order.
This poster looks the way it does because it seems to glorify war with many hot colors (red, orange and yellow) and being an exceptional warrior. The people in the background seem to be in pain and dying. There also appear to be rather large explosions in the background. It shows a courageous and powerful woman wearing an armor and having two swords on her both hands. This thing is indicating an incredible woman who have many monsters behind her, and she walks through them. It means that she killed the monsters, overcame her challenges, and destroyed the war to protect the world and maintain the piece. The poster also shows that the movie with a supper woman will be coming soon because the poster has ‘COMING SOON’ is bold and and capital with
The image I’ve chosen has somewhat of a Tim Burton vibe, even if it does only comes down to the girl in it, which is a reoccurring theme in a lot of his animated films. Specifically the witch girl in Para-Norman especially given what could be ghosts in the world she has created for her self. The image is on a pretty large truck with (when put together) a collection of monotone colors like yellow, grey, black, and white. The characters within the piece vary from a rain drop shape to a shape resembling a germ or even a fish. The only “message” I feel that can be gained from this would be you create the world around you and sometimes you have to see it for what you’ve created it with. Sometimes imagination can help you within your reality so
Annabelle 2: Creation by David F. Sandberg is a modern example of a horror movie based on supernatural fears. The trailer opens with a woman telling the audience about how she and her husband Samuel lost their daughter. Usually, the image of a grieving family would not be something to be fearful of, except for when an evil spirit answers their prayers for commutation pretending to be their daughter and asks to be given life again through a doll. On top of communication from the dead, with the woman telling the story now whispering and the light piano notes playing in the background, the audience is lead to believe that the possessed doll is not yet finished with this unsuspecting family. Viewers are then introduced to the orphanage that our grossly misguided family have opened their home to. According to the trailer, the family thought helping the girls could be their penance but they ended up giving the spirit exactly what it wanted, a weaker subject to embody. After seeing that Janice is unable to defend herself, the spirit starts leading the girl to where its hidden hoping to be freed.
The tones and hues utilized in this piece all originate from the darker side of the color wheel, aside from the stream of light coming from the doorway. These dark colors were chosen specifically to add depth to the eerie, unexpected mood of the scene, and further play up the nervous reaction of the young girl. At the bottom right hand corner of the ad, a short tag line reads “Some toys never die”. This phrase is memorable, yet short enough so as not to distract from the scene in the ad, and indicates to the audience that the ad writers’ dark comedy in the text means that the ad as a whole is not meant to be truly scary. The phrase is placed just above a small image of a Duracell battery, creating a memorable connection between the two. Ad designers for this piece clearly took careful consideration of every detail, as even the font, which resembles that of a carnival ad, accentuates the eerie, haunting tone of the scene, and tying the message together nicely. The stream of light coming from the doorway also casts downwards towards the text, drawing the reader’s attention to
One might say that horror film- genre has been invented by feminists. Horror films seem to be one of the only genres that have women as heroines instead of dominated side characters. In horror genre women are the ones fighting against evil and men are the ones dying trying to help these heroines. Or perhaps the horror genre uses heroines to differ it self from hero dominant action genre. Or maybe horror films were created to represent the ultimate horror of the dominant masculine society: a strong woman who can survive by herself. This essay will analyse genders used in contemporary horror genre and it will delve in to the difference of masculinity and femininity presented in present horror films.
Horror films are movies that aim to elicit a strong physiological reaction in the viewer, such as raised heartbeat and fear. Three horror films by the names of Psycho, Scream and The Messengers will be analysed and compared to an episode of the popular children’s show Shaun the Sheep. Five elements will be addressed in this analysis, those being camera techniques, Mise-en-scene, Editing, Lighting and Sound.
Last month I attended Professor Farrell’s speech on Universal Studio horror films at the library in Mauldin. The purpose of this speech was to entertain his audience by using visual aids to speak on Universal Studio horror movies from 1931 to 1945. The speech included many versions of films such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and The Invincible Man. Professor Farrell did an incredible job entertaining the audience and speaking on the differences between each version of films. I’m going to take the seven steps of the Shannon –Waver Model to critique his speech. The Shannon-Weaver model was designed to improve communication and includes specific concepts such as sender, message, channel, Receiver, feedback, noise and context.
The poster is a very suitable choice because it is very detailed, eye-catching, exciting and depicts the genre clearly and represents many aspects of the film.
The first poster reveals a blurry image of a hand raised for the viewer to see while another poster features a creepy, distressed eye, as reported by ComingSoon.net. The third new poster, on the other hand, displays an unidentified flying object hovering around buildings.
According to Prince (2004), horror films today are more disturbing than those produced during the genres establishment. During the classical Hollywood era, horror films were located in distant places, in the woods or abandoned territories. The films would mostly show a group of people going to a camp where the horror would then take place, or while on a trip, the vehicle would stop halfway in an unknown place, and the horror would also begin. All scenes would then take place in that abandoned place chosen by the film. At the end of the film, monsters were killed by the hero. The hero would then go on to live his live normal, after returning safely to his hometown where it was safe (Prince 2004). The sense of horror taking place in unknown places,
