Many people are under the impression that just because riding a horse does not involve humans running around and playing with a ball, makes horseback riding a non-sport. I am here to tell you that is not the case at all. There are many different types of sports and not all of them include balls, or nets, or goals, or even running. That is why I firmly believe that yes, horse riding is, in fact, a sport.
So that begs the question, what is a sport? Is it using a ball or scoring goals or running and kicking? Is it competing against others with the aim of winning a trophy, ribbon, or money? If a so-called sport does not include those things, does that make it not a sport? Here is my criteria for a sport: if it is in the Olympics, it is a sport.

All of them take a lot of concentration and are physically tiring.
But you just sit there, you may be thinking; you just make the horse go and stop. All you’re doing is staying on top of the animal and telling it where to go and how fast, when to turn, when to jump, and so on. You’re not really doing anything. It’s not a sport. You don’t run around, or use balls, or score goals, or anything like that. That’s what the horse is doing, and you’re along for the ride. That means you’re not playing a sport.
And I see your point. I do not run around or score goals. But the thing is, I do win prizes, ribbons, or trophies, or money. It is competitive, which means I compete against other people also trying to win. If it looks like I am just sitting on the horse, that means I am riding right. It shouldn’t look like I’m doing anything, but I am. It takes a lot of effort to ride the horse without falling off or bouncing around uncontrollably when we are going faster than a walk. I have to make sure that the horse is listening to me, and when it isn’t listening, I have to make it listen. I have to boss a thousand pound animal around from a position it could easily throw me. It is not easy by any means, and I allow that I have never played football or baseball, and I trust anyone who has played that tells me it’s difficult. I don’t understand why it’s so hard for someone who hasn’t ridden to tell me that horse-riding
One of the activities on the list that I thought was the furthest thing from a sport was Pigeon Racing. Even though I believed Pigeon racing to have incorporated many of the key components of a sport such as competition, a governing bodies, benefits, and strategy; it fails to meet the other requirements. One requirement that is not met is maintaining a certain level of physical and mental activity. In this particular sport the performer is completely dependent upon the pigeon to compete. By doing so this completely removes an athlete from the sport and eliminates any human chance in affecting the overall outcome. Instead of a sport I would categorize this as a recreational activity that is fun to watch and be involved in. I believe that an activity that relies solely on an animal performance cannot be considered to be a true sport.
The definition of a sport is as follows, “Noun; an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.”. I would argue that colorguard, an activity in which one spins flags, weapons, batons, and props with the marching band, should be considered a sport (Dictionary.com).
In order for a sport to be a sport it has to follow certain guidelines. So let’s see what these guidelines are. The first one is it must be a physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of mass. Secondly contesting or competing against/with an opponent is required.
Horse Racing is a gambling, sport and always has been for many years. Thousands of people each year go and watch the horseraces all over the country, even the world. There are some owners that take amazing care of their horses, making sure that they have all of the supplements that they need, they go to the vet when need, and they are properly trained to do their best at the race. Then there are some owners that just care about the fame and the money. They are the people you have to watch out for. Don’t get me wrong all race horse owners want their name to get out and the money to be going into their bank account. But, the race horse owners that just want
In conclusion, dancing should be considered a sport because dancing improves memory, balance and coordination, and provides the best mental escape for your brain. If dance were considered a sport then the world would agree. The point is that even though dance is one of the world’s true art forms, it is still a sport, and should be considered one by all of society, including athletes
In today’s world cheerleading is not well recognized and considered as a sport, but it is more than that. It takes more than cheering and chanting to compete as a cheerleader . Here is why I think cheerleading should be considered a sport, because it takes athleticism, persistence, and courage too compete as a cheerleader. What does to take to be considered a sport? According to the Oxford English Dictionary a sport is a, “Sense relating to play, pleasure, or entertainment” (Oxford English Dictionary).
Hello class, as you may know by now my name is Peighton Davis and I have a passion for horses and I wanted to learn more of the ways horses can help you. Many people consider activities such as, football, baseball, volleyball, and track to be a sport. The qualities that tend to make these activities considered sports are, running, tackling, hitting a ball, participating in relays, and so much more. Not mentioned in this list of sports is dance. People tend to believe that dance is nothing more than moving your body to some music, it is also very mentally engaging as well as being a physically demanding activity. The question that many might ask: Why is dance not classified as a sport? Dancers that compete in competitive situations do not get off as easily as people may think. These dancers require countless hours of exercising, training, and stretching, just as much, if not more, than other sports. To perfect the art of dancing comes with years of training and dedication. With this explanation of the art of dancing, it can be concluded that dance is in fact a sport.
The Oxford English dictionary defines horse riding as, “the sport or activity of riding horse.” horse riding community has come across many people in their lives that have strong opinions about horse riding and that they feel strongly that horse riding is simply not a sport. In this manner, I will acknowledge the oppositions argument against the event’s cruelty; my broad understanding of the issue will instil some level of confidence in readers. A contrasting conjunction will be used however, to cut across the positivity that will be created and will hint at the author’s position on the issue; that the Melbourne Cup is cruel. Aiming to appeal to the audience’s sense of empathy, the excruciating training undergone by the ‘two-year-old horses’ will be explained with the consequences listed: ‘torn ligaments and tendons, dislocated joints and even fractured bones’ and ‘excessive stress’. This building up of sympathy prior to the introduction of the arguments will invoke in the audience the want to halt this cruelty already. The commonly recognized phrase ‘the race that stops a nation’ will be used effectively to convey the author’s point of view on the issue, serving as a pun. Intending to create guilt in the readers, the celebration on this day will be shown to cost the lives of the horses. Rhetorical questions will be utilized to belittle the opposition’s arguments, leaning on the side of sarcasm. The use of reputable sources such as the University of Melbourne, the RSPCA and the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses throughout will provide shocking statistics that support arguments, this will evoke moments of agreeance in
What exactly determines whether or not an activity is a sport? The term sport is defined by The Free Dictionary as: A physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively, an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of
With such an atypical style, dance can be found in various forms. Dance can be entertainment, tradition, recreation, a competitive event, or even a simple act of joy. So should dance be classified as a sport....or what? Many people believe that dance is a "cute" activity that is "fun" but shouldn't be taken seriously. Why is this? Dance has been around for generations, but, as it seems, dance is still a thing of the past, that hasn't caught up with modern trends. Although dance may be considered old-fashioned - should dance be excluded
Also many stated that barrel racing is abusive and should not be allowed anywhere. The true definition of abuse is “Abuse: 1 to use wrongly 2 to mistreat, esp. by inflicting physical or sexual harm on 3 to insult; revile” (Agnes, pg.3). Now the question is why certain people believe this is an abusive sport. My mother Renae Makarrall says, “Spectators may believe this sport is abusive because when a horse is misbehaving or the performance was poor, spectators then witness whips, bats, spurs, and even hands, being used to hit the horse with more power than needed. Sometimes I have even witnessed the riders take their horse and run them until they are lathered, I personally find this unnecessary and see where spectators see this as a form of abuse.” Spectators can be judgmental, they look at the bits within the horses mouth and they tend to judge the rider by the bit used, but some horses need that bit. “Any bit can be harsh if used incorrectly,” says a member of Ponybox. It is normally said that it is the bits, whips, bats, hands, and even pictures that make spectators believe that this sport is abusive (Leste-Lasserre). Equine riders use tools to discipline a 1200 pound animal too keep themselves safe, but used in the wrong way at the wrong time and it can easily be spotted as abuse to the
A sport is defined as an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. Competitive. Competition is a rivalry between two or more persons or groups for an object desired in common, usually resulting in a victor and a loser. Something to argue would be if a competition could legitimately be considered a sport. The word ‘compete’ is in the definition of sport after all. So, should eSports, or Electronic Sports, be considered a sport?
Video games should be considered a sport because they require specialized skills, teamworks, and requires focused or sustained practice to maintain skill all though theyŕe not physical, throw any sport you want at these three things and video games have them too.
