On November 5, 2015 at approximately 1000 hours I took a jail tour of the Santa Cruz Correctional facility on Water Street, with Melinda Payne as my tour guide. There were a few things that stood out to me during the jail tour. First, I observed how clean and orderly the jail was. There were no bad odors and the walls, floors, and windows were well kept. Personally, I try to maintain a clean and organized workspace therefore the jail environment fit me well. Second, I noticed the overall size of facility. The jail is relatively small in size and was broken into different sections. Personally, I like this layout because I believe it allows for better communication to inmates and staff, better response to major incidents, and quick ability to
This book mainly talks about the boys attempting to break free from Furnance Penitentiary (an underground hidden government prison) and its evil warden. It’s a great book and I’m surprised that I actually took the time to read it due to the fact that I’m not a big reader. I hope you enjoy my synopsis.
Another commonly used alternative is house arrest and confinement. This sanction restricts an individual to his or her residence for specific periods of time; in most house arrest programs offenders are allowed to leave their homes only for employment, medical needs, or mandated assignments such as community service or school. The emphasis of this program is on confinement, and the supervising officers’ role is to ensure that the offender stays confined at home. There are three different levels of home confinement, each with a different degree of restricted freedom. The first is curfew which requires offenders to be in their residence during limited, specific hours, generally at night. The offender’s movements outside of the curfew hours are unregulated. The second is home detention that requires offenders to remain at home at all times except for employment, education, treatment, or other pre-approved activities. This program may be with the assisted with electronic monitoring. The last level is home incarceration. This program requires offenders to remain at home at all times, with very limited exceptions for religious or medical purposes. At a minimum, offenders are subject to random
Freedom. Independence. Liberty. Right. Opportunity. Each word shares the same meaning. Freedom is the ability to do, say, and think as one chooses. Unfortunately, freedom, justice, and equality have not always been as omnipresent as they are today. Without these qualities, a society can easily be filled with unrest. Where justice is lacking, tensions rise and there is little room for social progress. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” explains how equality is needed in order to make social progress and also shares some of the detrimental effects of injustice. In the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, the restriction of freedoms by the government causes riots and rebellions to break out that end up having lasting
Insomnia, paranoia, uncontrollable feelings of rage and fear are just some of the effects that a prisoner can experience after being placed in solitary confinement. I think the government should ban solitary confinement because it causes mental pain and suffering.
Every book has those big moments where the story wouldn't be how it is without it. Same in life. If the big moments in life weren't there then things in your life wouldn't have happened. "That day. Always in my head.
Probation serves as the most frequently used sentence for those convicted. This is evident when you consider that the United States justice system oversees nearly 7 million people. Over half of those, a staggering 3.7 million people, are on probation with another 840,000 on parole (Rabuy, 2017). With those individuals representing the largest percentage of the American corrections system, it is important that we learn as much as possible about probation in order to improve the success of these programs. Probation involves a set of conditions that the probationer agrees to adhere to in exchange for remaining in the community. Typical conditions include a waiver of the offenders fourth amendment rights, maintaining employment or school
Both jail and prison offer some type of early released programs, in this case probation and parole will briefly be discussed. Probation is a prison sentence that is suspended on the condition that the offender follow certain prescribed rules and commit no further crime (Seiter, 2008). Parole is similar to probation except that it is after a period of incarceration, which involved determinate and indeterminate sentencing (Seiter, 2008). The other types of prison sentencing include mandatory minimums, three-strike laws, and truth-in-sentencing (Wilson, 2001). The only difference is that a parole board allows convicts to serve the remainder of their term in society under supervision and strict limitations (Wilson, 2001). In summary both jails and prisons should strive to provide as much educational, health, and counseling opportunities as possible to reduce the likelihood of recidivism. Second, funding for the jail and prison systems will be briefly discussed.
Probation is a type of sentence for criminal defendants. Probation allows a convicted defendant to go free with a suspended sentence for a specified duration during good behavior. Probationers are placed under the supervision of a probation officer and must fulfill certain conditions. If the probationer violates a condition of probation, the court may place additional restrictions on the probationer or order the probationer to serve a term of imprisonment. Probation is normally for offenders sentenced to short terms in jail: it is not combined with a long prison sentence. legal dictionary)
America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. America is known as the land of opportunities, where all dreams come true; work hard the sky is the limit. However, this is the view that America wants all to see when in hindsight it is in fact a bad advertisement. Women and Men alike who are or have been incarcerated see America in a whole other light. Which brings into thought, why does the United States have the highest incarceration rate than any other country? Why is it that the jails are over populated with inmates? With statistics showing that these inmates primarily consist of minorities, mainly African American’s and Latinos. Could
For anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of being placed on probation, the biggest fear is violating and being sent to prison. In some circumstances this is a result of multiple incidents, while in other jurisdictions, it is after one minor slip up. So what are these circumstances, what is the violation process, and just how much power does the probation officer have? These are just a few of the questions that will be answered in the following essay.
My transformation began right from the start of my incarceration. Once I became sober enough to have clarity of mind I was able to see the error of my ways. God really hit me hard with reality and I began to trust God and he was able to reach my heart. I spent my time in prison learning the Gospel of Jesus Christ and once I did my life actually had hope for the first time in decades. I earned my high school diploma and once released I started to repair the damage I caused myself. I dedicated my life to God, sobriety. I began to adhere to the teachings of the Gospel along with personal growth and self-development. I enrolled in college and began to see my life as God intended it to be. I am now on a path dictated by God in service to Him. The
Prison Boy by Sharon McKay is a very powerful story about unprivileged children living in poverty. In this novel Pax lives in an orphanage where he meets young Kai, and since the day they met Pax was his devoted protector. When the head of the orphanage unexpectedly dies, Pax is forced to work to earn money to help him and Kai survive. In this novel Pax demonstrates courage and protectiveness. This is a deeply moving and emotional story.
A crucial part of the criminal justice system includes probation. Probation is the release of a criminal offender from detention or incarceration. At this time, the offender is subject to a period of good behavior under supervision. Probation is also referred to a kind of punishment that is giving as part of sentencing. Instead of giving an offender a longer sentence, a judge will order the defendant to report to their assigned probation officer on a regular basis, where the offender will receive a schedule instructing him or her of their probation requirements. If the defendant does not obey a probation order, the defendant will automatically return to jail or to court, only to be given a longer sentence by the judge. A person on probation is not allowed to leave the judicial district without permission of the probation officer or court (Seiter, 2011). The probationer shall report to the probation officer as directed and shall submit truthful and complete reports (Seiter, 2011). A person on probation must also follow all directions instructed by his or her probation officer truthfully. When on probation, an offender must obtain employment and needs to notify his or her probation officer of all changes of address within a three-day limit. The probationer shall also refrain from the excessive use of alcohol
Another example of the home being a prison is shown in “The Good Wife.” The disturbing tale of a husband who literally keeps his wife prisoner. The husband presumably found evidence of an affair with the elusive man named Ferguson. The story begins as if everything were normal. Mr. Benjamin, as he’s referred to, asks the maid if “Mrs. Benjamin” is awake and if she has eaten (137). He then approaches an ominous door with a big lock. Unlocking the door and turning the knob, Mr. Benjamin opens the door to find Mrs. Benjamin there, right where he kept her. However he avoids eyecontact with
