My other summer reading book was a fiction novel by Nancy Farmer called "The House of Scorpions". I choose this book based on a recommendation from a friend. I also choose this book because science-fiction is one of my favorite genres. I was overall pleased with this book and glad I gave it a shot. I read this books every night, just before I went to bed for about a week and a half. I would recommend this book to my classmates because it's an exciting but thought-provoking book. The book made me rethink topics of soul, identity, who we give power to, and human rights. The book was was well-paced with a great plot line.
What is the last really good book you’ve read? If you can’t name that book of the top of your head, I have a great suggestion for you. I Have Lived a Thousand Years, written by Livia Bitton-Jackson, is the story of a Elli Friedmann, a teenage girl, who is suddenly ripped from her daily life and forced to live in a concentration camp. You should read this book because it is fast-paced, it’s told from an unexpected point of view, and it will shed some light on life inside a concentration camp.
My favorite reading was, Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler hands down. I believe the connection that was made with real life situations such as the Berlin wall of the Cold War or the 1992 Los Angeles Rebellion in which was a very interesting and knowledegable aspect to adhere upon.
Hey, I just finished the book called Dork Diaries, Tales from a NOT-SO-Happy Heartbreaker By Rachel Renee Russell. My 5th grade teacher recommended it to me because she thought I should read books that have a little bit of everything that I like in a book, I agreed.
I would recommend this book to all high school readers and any readers who have a desire to read a
The book that I had chosen to read was Buried Onions by Gary Soto. I found the book by looking at the reading list and after reading the description decided that it seemed the most interesting as I enjoy reading about social issues that some people have to live with.
The story that I choose to read was Holding Up The Universe by Jennifer Niven. I originally choose to read this book because it’s cover looked very interesting to me. The title hooked me and reading the book has been nothing but interesting. The book was about to teenagers whose worlds were completely different but were both the exact opposite of ideal. They were both struggling through hard times until they found each other. I would recommend other people my age to read this book because it is so inspirational and because once you start reading it it is hard to put it down. It keeps you interested and helps you learn how to get through some hard times.
The book I choose for my summer reading was, Blink Once by Cylin Busby. I choose this book because I read the first page and it kept my attention and I knew I needed to read the rest of the book. I did and it turned out to be a wonderful book with a nice twist.
Dystopia; an “imaginary” society in which citizens are dehumanized and live what readers deem as an unpleasant, worthless life. Nancy Farmer’s novel The House of The Scorpions and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World are two dystopian novels that paint a surreal image of two societies on two opposite sides of the spectrum. Farmer’s novel depicts the life of a clone of the head of a huge drug cartel named El Patron. The clone, Matt, lives in a house of secrecy and lies, however, his life in other’s eyes seems picture-perfect. On the opposite end, Huxley’s novel depicts a test-tube, artificial society in which humans are not born, but decanted
One of my three picks for books is “Walk Two Moons” by Sharon Creech. I would choose this book because it was recommended to me by one of my favorite teachers ever. My fourth grade teacher, Mr.Menswar loaned me this book and thought that I could handle it even though it was above fourth grade reading level, which made me excited to read it.
The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer Fascinating and insightful, Nancy Farmer’s book The House of the Scorpion holds the power to captivate any audience with the tale of a young boy named Matteo Alacran. Being a clone, Matteo, called Matt, faces many perilous and persistent challenges that force him to change the way he thinks and acts. Affected immensely by the other characters in the story, Matt learns that not everyone gets what they deserve.
One of the books I read in quarter 2 is Someone Named Eva by Joan Wolf. It was a fantastic book and I would rate it a nine out of ten. The book was about WWII in Germany with a strong girl. I am not one for a dark topic but this one was a well written and had a wonderful plot. I love that Milada, the main girl and narrator, still remembered her name. They Nazis gave her a new name, Eva, and practically brainwashed her and yet she managed to obtain her name after the war and was reunited with her mom.
My favorite reading reading assignment would probably be when we read “Duffy’s Jacket”. I liked that story because it created great suspense, and at the end of the story it was ironic. The end was the complete opposite of what I was expecting. To describe this book, I would say it is suspenseful, ironic, and the plot was created very well.
I picked the book called “Find Me” by Romily Bernard, because my favorite genre of books are mystery. I liked how the cover had a face in the background of it, you could tell it was a girl face because of the hair. The cover also had “Find Me” written all over it, so it made the book stand out a lot. My first impression on the book was that it was going to be a good mystery book just by the cover of it. After I looked at the cover, I read the summary inside of the book and it just grabbed my attention it was really good, well written, and it didn’t spoil the book. I also liked the quotes on the back of the book, I thought that was a cool idea. This book keeps you engaged and wanting to know more.
The Sky Is Falling by Kit Pearson is a good novel. As it deals with many themes that people can relate to like moving to a new place , being an outsider and judging things before you experience them. This book also gives another perspective during world war two. Usually in books about WWII the are either about solider or people escaping/running away from the war. This shows us a person who is passionate about the war and doesn't want to leave the front lines. This book starts off faster paced then slows down a bit while still further developing the plot well. I think that this would be a great novel for high school students as it can be a new and interesting read. This novel can teach the students about history while still focusing on the themes
The book I chose to do my summer reading assignment on, was Ashfall. Personally, I was very fascinated by this book, it truly was one of those novels that left you questioning, what would I do if I was in that situation?. Mike Mullin kept the storyline going with very imaginative descriptions and detailed scenes, that left me turning the pages, till I realized the book was almost done for. Nevertheless, I thought this book was a riveting tale of survival that demonstrated, how dark times can turn good people into creatures with no emotions. The protagonist, Alex, was extremely strong willed and his character was deeply authentic. Throughout the novel I could connect with Alex, to the point where I felt like I was in the book making the decisions
