In the book, “The Complete Persepolis” written by Marjane Satrapi every woman had a prescribed role. The role of Marji’s maid was to show that social class differences do exist and to show what happens within these social class differences. Marji’s mother’s role was to support Marji and make sure that she was well off, while her grandmother’s role was also to support her and give her words of wisdom. Her school teachers’ role was to make sure that the female children, attending the school, wore their veils, while the guardians of the revolution’s role were to arrest females that were improperly veiled. Marjane, her mother, and her grandmother are all extremely multi-faceted characters that have complex beliefs and inner conflicts. Satrapi, through her interactions with her mother and grandmother shows the complexities of their interpersonal relationships and in the process, their humanity. But Satrapi also does not make the mistake of glorifying these women. They are shown as real humans who make mistakes and have conflicts both within themselves and with external forces. Some prime examples include the protests over the mandatory wearing of the veil in Iran. That said, Satrapi also does not generalize Iranian women. Any interactions Marjane has with women in the book are seen through her perspective alone. Because of this, Marjane does not try to explain anyone’s actions but her own and the reader is left to interpret the actions of other characters’. Throughout the novel Marji is constantly trying to figure out who she is and who she is going to become. By writing her own story, Satrapi gives herself agency and a voice in her own story. Through examining her thoughts and presenting events as she witnessed them, she forces the audience to see her world as a woman. Unfortunately, the era of men and women being equal was hasty. Briefly after Mohammed’s death Islamic society changed, so did the interpretations of the Quran to meet different circumstances. Almost simultaneously women became inferior almost being viewed as possessions and property. Having choices was no longer an option for women, whatever the man said became the law. Girls at birth could be killed by their father’s because boys carried the name of the family while girls usually were concubines, workers, or sold. Most significantly women’s roles depended largely on what the husband’s economic status was. If the husband was a farmer the wife had to help in the fields or if the husband worked in the city she had to help run the business.
