Task 4d:
How and Why are Safe Working Practices in a Lab Regulated?
Safe laboratory practices are regulated within the workplace so that organisation can be sure that the lab itself is running smoothly and is not causing any harm to its employees.
CLEAPSS hazcards (or as they also known Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services) are used in schools and other educational centres providing the appropriate information for technician staff conducting experiments that require the use of concentrated chemicals to prepare more diluted solutions that may be classed as high risk, they include hazard classification, exposure limits and the appropriate general control measures that must be carried out. Manufacturer’s data sheets are also created for chemicals used within the lab and give important information about the physical composition of the chemicals (e.g. the melting point and boiling point), toxicity, health effects, first aid precautions, reactivity, storage, disposal and the protective clothing and equipment needed when handling the chemicals.
MSDS or a Material Safety Data Sheet contains important information on potential hazards, how to work safely with a chemical product, storage, handling and emergency procedures all in which are related to the hazards of a material. MSDS documents aid those using the chemicals to perform a risk assessment sufficiently and contain more information than the label helping to maintain the safe working practices as it outlines the hazards of the product, how to use the product, what accidents may occur if the safe practices are not carried out and what to do if such incidents were to occur therefore a MSDS documents is an essential starting point for the development of safe working practice.
To ensure good lab practice and quality of service communication with organisations that assess labs is very important as they embody a set of principles which provide a framework for labs which must be planned, performed, monitored, reported and archived. The aim of organizations such as this is to ensure that the data submitted by labs
Employers, managers and supervisors should all ensure that workplace practices reflect the risk assessment and safety statement. Behavior, the way in which everyone works, must reflect the safe working practices laid down in these documents. Supervisory checks and audits should be carried out to determine how well the aims set down are being achieved. Corrective action should be taken when required. Additionally, if a workplace is provided for use by others. The safety statement must also set out the safe work practices that are relevant to them. Hence, it is
This essay is about why lab procedures and practice must be communicated in a lab.
The purpose of this lab is to test substances and to determine the physical and chemical properties of substances.
Educational establishments must have in place appropriate measures to ensure that the risks to the health and safety of pupils/students from exposure to hazardous substances are minimised.
Risk assessments are vital to be included within a laboratory setting as it involves evaluating the potential risks which may be involved when completing an experiment or activity. The employer must be aware that risks which someone is exposed to at work must be reduced by them responsibly implementing precautions in order to make the setting safer. They need to analyse: what could possible go wrong? How likely is it? And what would be the consequences? These questions are regularly used when creating a risk assessment so that every risk sheet has a similar outline and meets the criteria of an effective risk assessment. It covers the general procedures, the working environment and the handling, storage and transportation of various substances.
This document is not meant to be a substitute for a formal laboratory report. The Lab Report Assistant is simply a summary of the experiment’s questions, diagrams if needed, and data tables that should be addressed in a formal lab report. The intent is to facilitate students’ writing of lab reports by providing this information in an editable file which can be sent to an instructor.

A hand-held device can be used to enter the samples onto the LIMS. The sample can then be put through the testing procedure with minimal work for the technical staff. The LIMS can also be used to monitor stock levels so that ingredients or products do not fall below safe levels for the company to continue working.
Lab safety is very important if you are going to work in a science lab. The two things to always remember when working in a lab is safety and that lab is a privilege. The Lab is a privilege each student is lucky to have, without it the students would not be able to conduct experiments in the laboratory. One of the most important reasons why students should always be safe is because many things in the lab can be harmful to one or others in the lab. Toxic substances may be spilled, shards of glass or other sharps may cause injuries/accidents if one is not careful. Lab procedures must be talked over and thoroughly in a lab to make sure that the lab is a safe environment to perform tasks for the experiment. Using good judgment, observe safety rules and follow directions can prevent accidents from happening.
The purpose of this lab was for the student to get involved with his or hers new lab kit as well as being able to know, identify and use each other tools provided in the kit. Another key learning aspect of this lab is to teach the student how to measure properly the many units in the SI system. I will be using laboratory dilutions, measurements, and weights to then calculate using algebraic formula.
Illustrate your findings using 2 tables (one for risks and one for hazards)using the headings: Environment, Equipment & Personal (1.1 & 1.2)
An assessment of the risks to health arising from the use of hazardous substances at work and deciding what precautions are needed,
Hazardous materials can be important in everyday life when properly handled. However, when improperly handled, they can result in injury, death, and destruction as well as have lingering effects that may last for years to come. To address the risk of an uncontrolled hazardous materials release, there must be a coordinated effort to identify, locate, and quantify the hazardous materials in a particular location (Drexel University Safety & Health, 2001). Typically, industry and government agree that a hazardous materials incident is one where
Hazardous chemicals include flammable liquids, acids, gases and solvents. This should all be included in the Production Risk Assessment for each performance and should state each substance that is to be used. The substances should be used in accordance with requirements set out in the Safety Data Sheet included in the risk assessments.
It is important it have a written work Health and Safety Policy for the organizations and businesses which have management systems. The Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 addresses Major Hazard Facilities in Regulation 558 and Schedule 17(1.2) and requires that the Safety Management System includes a Safety Policy, including the operator’s broad aims in relation to the safe operation of the major hazard facility, and that the safety policy must include and express commitment to ongoing improvement of all aspects of the safety management system. A Work Health and Safety Policy is an explicit statement of business commitment to work health and safety. It will include a statement outlining the importance which is placed on work health and safety and how it is to be implemented.
