How Autism Affects Child Development

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) that is very complex and involves many different and separate physical and mental disorders. Researchers have long been puzzled by autism, or childhood autism as it is often referred to. This severely disabling disorder affects approximately 80,000 children in the United States and is usually diagnosed by therapists and psychologists before the onset of two and a half years of age.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a developmental disorder that affects the brain. Many children are affected by Autism. It limits a child’s ability to connect, socialize and relate to others.  Autism is a growing disorder and every year more children are born with autism. There is no cure for autism; there are no known facts about what causes autism in children at an early age, just possible causes. I was introduced to autism at an early age. My mom used to work for a preschool as an aid for children who had special needs. Whenever I was sick as a kid, she would take me to work, where I had the opportunity to observe a boy named Connor. I found him fascinating. I wondered why he was so obsessed with this blue truck, and why he had to have it with him at all times. Because wherever this blue truck was, Connor was, and this I couldn’t understand as a young girl. I always wondered why he couldn 't have the red truck, or the yellow truck, or even a different toy to play with. What was so special about the blue one?

Oxford Living Dictionary defines autism as “A developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior.” (Oxford Living Dictionary) The dictionary is in total concordance with the American Psychiatry Association, as it is clearly implied that autism is a mental illness. The prospect of this research is to let in on the symptoms of autism, the reasons why it is not a total disadvantage and how to cultivate the best traits in autistic children.

Autism is a mental disability that develops as the individual grows and develops, it changes the way they view the world and how they interact and understand people, it affects each individual differently due to it being a spectrum disability meaning that there are many forms ranging from atypical autism to high functioning autism this makes it very hard to fully understand it due to a lot of differences. There are around 1 in 100 people who are classed to be on the spectrum, that equals to around 700,000 people within the United Kingdom and it affects more men than women, some people with autism will be able to function within society with slight support from the family, school and work whereas some will need specialist support throughout their whole life this is because there is no cure for autism their parents/ carers have to try to get the care and support they need to overcome challenges that people without autism take
