The emergence of the Internet in the 21st century has dramatically changed how we communicate. It has opened a new avenue for facilitating human interaction. Information that would otherwise take hours or even days to be made public, now take seconds with a click of a button. Is this good or bad? What are the consequences of rapid-fire quick communication style that we have adopted? In articles “How Black Lives Matter Uses Social Media to Fight The Power,” and “The Attorney Fighting Revenge Porn,” authors Bijan Stephen and Margaret Talbot, discuss the pros and cons. One of the most recent example of this is new form of mass mobilization structure is the success of Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in 2013. Black Lives Matter began with the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the murder of Trayvon Martin. The movement was created by activists Opal Tometi, Patrisse Cullors, and Alicia Garza to combat systemic racism and police brutality targeted towards African-Americans in the United States. In “How Black Lives Matter Uses Social Media to Fight The Power,” author Bijan Stephen serves as a guide and leads readers through the difficulties of early civil rights activists in the 1960s and how the widespread use of social media has opened doors for many social activists today. Stephens describes,“It (social media) helped pressure the federal government to investigate police practices in Ferguson and Baltimore. It has successfully pushed Democratic presidential contenders to come forward with policy proposals on the issues that specifically concern black people in America. And an offshoot of the movement, a project called Campaign Zero that was organized in part by Mckesson, has put forward a bunch of specific policy proposals to uproot police violence” (Stephen 2015).
