How can e-Health improve the US healthcare delivery system?
Research of the term “e-Health” reveals a wide variety of definitions. These definitions have a common theme of utilizing information and communication technologies to improve the quality of healthcare. For this article, e-Health is defined as:
… an emerging field in the intersection of medical informatics, public health, and business, referring to health services and information delivered or enhanced through the Internet and related technologies. In a broader sense, the term characterizes not only a technical development, but also a state-of-mind, a way of thinking, an attitude, and a commitment for networked, global thinking, to improve health care locally, regionally, and worldwide by using information and communication technology (Eysenbach, G. 2001).
This definition not only highlights the common theme mentioned above but stresses the need for continuous development or adoption of technology to support the goal of e-Health. So why the need to investments in e-Health? US healthcare spending has significantly increased faster than any other country. Despite this spending, the US achieves the worst outcome of the top 13 high-income countries on chronic conditions, obesity and infant mortality (Mangan, 2015). Treatment of Chronic disease accounts for 78% of the Country’s healthcare expenditure, but there are various barriers hindering appropriate treatment for these patients.
