How to Manage a Classroom Effectively
Many decades ago, an educational philosopher, Harry K. Wong defined classroom management as, “the practices and procedures that allow teachers to teach and students to learn” (Wong, 1998). The classroom is an environment for students to learn and engage in academics. The classroom is also a place where each individual should be recognized for their achievements, the students should also feel secure and comfortable within their environment. “Managing the learning environment is both a major responsibility and an ongoing concern for every teacher, even those with years of experience” (Good & Brophy, 1990, P. 131). In the first place, a lot goes on in classrooms simultaneously, even when students seem to be doing only one task in common. At any moment each student needs something different such as different information and hints. Another reason for the importance of classroom management is that students form opinions and perceptions about teaching that are inconsistent with teachers’. To me as a human being or a future teacher, classroom management refers to all of the things that a teacher does to organize students, space, time and materials so that instruction in content and student learning can take place. In all that a teacher communicate, no matter how insignificant or innocuous it may seem, it contributes to the status as a teacher and the ability to manage the classroom.
