There is a quote of Gilbert Keith Chesterton, an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist, like that “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” In the Vietnam War, many official soldiers and civilians took part in the combat. It started from December 1956 to 1975, nearly 20 years, in Vietnam. The Vietnam War was a war between North Vietnam and government of South Vietnam that United States participated and supported. Vietnam War was the longest deployment, costly war of America. According a statistic, “more than 58,000 died or remain missing, and 300,000 others were wounded (Anderson, “The Military Diplomatic Vietnam War”). The war caused the loss of nearly 60,000 American lives and millions of Vietnamese casualties. The war caused much grief to many families. Not only is the private pain of soldiers who died, but it was the pain of many families with bereavement. The pain did not stop there, the aftermath of the Vietnam War also caused the loss, the pain for generations today. Moreover, not only the soldiers on the battlefield had to be sacrificed. Many innocent civilians have to make sacrifices in the pointless war. Themselves American soldiers suffer haunted by the brutal images, casualties scene of the war in Vietnam. American soldiers' effort became decrease. In the U.S., many demonstrations were protesting the Vietnam War and require the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam. “Opposition to the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s grew into the most extensive antiwar movement in American history” (Miller, “Vietnam War Protest”). Even the Americans have realized the absurdity of the Vietnam War. Americans spent a huge amount of money on this war, many lives were lost. Many people have many different views on the outcome of the Vietnam War and whether Viet Cong has succeed or not caused much controversies.
