Courage: the ability to do something that frightens one. This definition from dictionary.com. could be a synonym for the woman Abigail Adams. Adams was a lady of the 1700’s, a time when women were suppose to be seen and not heard. She was first lady during the term of the second presidency. She used her position to advance the roles of women and the rights they held. Adams showed a lot of courage in attempting a feat such as this. During the time that John Adams was president Abigail Adams showed a lot of courage by trying to stand up for the rights of women. She wrote the letter “ Remember the Ladies” to her husband while he was away. (Abigail Adams’ Last Act of Defiance) She wrote this to her husband because she wanted women to have some of the same rights as men had. In her letter she was very hopeful that her words would get across to John that women should have some of the same rights as men. With her letters she was able to get single women to be able to own and take care of land. She was a women who showed a lot of courage by sending letters to her husband telling him he needs to let women have some of the same rights that men have. She also took care of the farm when John was away which normally it is just men who take care of the land, women mostly did the housework and took care of the children. Lastly she put aside some of the money she was raising for her husband and made it her “pocket money” Abigail showed a lot of courage in today's world that would not seem like she should courage but back then it was not like women to stick up for themselfs, take care of land and they didn't have a lot of money men were the ones with money. “Remember the Ladies” Abigail
