Agatha Christie was born on September 15, 1890 in the south-western part of England in a Torquay, Devon into a family of four: her, her two sisters, and her mother. She was homeschooled alongside her two sisters by her mother and, as a child, Christie was often encouraged to write by her mother and sisters. So, from an early age she took up writing and found out that she enjoyed writing greatly. Thus, from this newfound desire to write, she started to make her own characters and her own plots. When Anne was only five years of age, she contracted trachoma, an eye disease. Her mother, Alice, suffered from tuberculosis and unfortunately died when Anne was eight years old. Her abusive father, Thomas, left Anne and her siblings after the death of his wife, thus leaving forcing Anne and one of her brothers to Tewksbury Almshouse. Tewksbury Almshouse was very run down and dirty which eventually led to Anne brother’s death a few months after their arrival. While Anne was at Tewksbury, she gained an interest in schools for the blind and was persistent in gaining an education and escaping poverty.

Agatha Christie uses the technique of foreshadowing to help the reader make predictions. When Mr. Blore exits the train in Oakbridge Station, he is greeted by an old man who gives him a message that a squall is coming. “He’s nearer the day of judgement than I am! But there, as it happens, he was wrong…”(Christie 17). This quote helps the reader make a prediction that death could possibly be in the near future. I learned that while reading books, mystery novels in particular, making predictions is necessary to form a connection to the text.
