Do you like basketball? Well if you do, do you know how basketball got its start? Well just to get its beginning, basketball got its start with 2 peach baskets at each end of the court. Then as the “basketball” a soccer ball was used! Some interesting fact about basketball is that it was used as a conditioning sport during the cold. First, basketball was created by James Naismith. He also created it in 1891, but he only had 13 rules. Rule number 7 was a very interesting rule, it was if the other team had 3 consecutive fouls, than the other team gets a point! Right now we have 10 basic rules, but they do go deeper into it, it’s just the basics. James Naismith had invented basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts. Originally James was a Canadian-American …show more content…
So in 1903, the halves were shortened from 20 minutes to 15 minutes. Then in 1906, five to nine players on each side!!! In 1910, dribbling is outlawed! In 1916, there is no coaching allowed from the sidelines during the game ( except halftime ) No timeouts, and no substitution! That rule is just crazy! I would never be able to play like that! Then in 1918, bounce pass was legalized, and substitutes may be used, but they can never reenter the game. So if that rule didn’t make sense, let me explain, so if I were a starter and i really needed a brake, coach could let me come off, but if I would want to go back on, I wouldn’t be able to. That’s because I started and if I wanted to go back in that was be reentering! Okay, now 1922, there must be at least 6 players on a side, but maximum of 9. Now 1927, players must always wear numbers on the backs of their shirts. In 1956, the ball can be held with 2 hands by opponent, and the 3 seconds in the lane is a violation. In 1962, each team is permitted 2 players to roam the court, and the player is allowed to snatch the ball from the opponent. Now, to me I think that rule would be a cool idea and just a plain stupid idea! I would love it because we could get the ball more often if one of my teammates snatched the ball away, but I would hate it if the other team would do it to me. So I think that rule should have never been made! Now 1963 is the last rule, 3 point field goals were
According to www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0771582.html, “ James Naismith, a teacher at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, is credited with inventing basketball in 1891. The first “hoops” were actually just peach baskets and the first backboards were made of wire. The game became an official Olympic event at the Summer Games in Berlin, Germany in 1936.”
Basketball (or Basket Ball –then two words) was invented by Dr. James Naismith in December 1981. He was an instructor at Christian Workers in Springfield Massachusetts. On March 11, 1892 students and workers at the school played the first public game of basket ball. On March 22, 1983 Smith College in Massachusetts becomes the first women’s school to play basket ball. Men are not allowed to watch the games.
Dr. James Naismith was given a task to come up with a game to play inside the gym during winter at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts (Pruter, Robert, editor. “Basketball.” Basketball, The Electronic Encyclopedia of Chicago, 1 Jan. 2005). This is how the game of basketball was invented in 1891. The goal in this new game was to put the soccer ball in the opposing teams peach basket ten feet in the air. Every time a team scored they had to stop the game and climb a latter and retrieve the ball from the peach basket. Basketball has changed so much since 1891. The game of basketball started with thirteen rules and nine players on each team. Today there are five players from each team on the court, and still
Basketball wasn’t always like it is today. It was a lot different and the rules were crazy. Basketball was invented in 1891 in Springfield,Massachusetts by James Naismith. The basketball was called the National Basket Ball League when the game became popular and as the years went on more and people played. The first basketball professional league was invented in 1898 and players had to sign a contract to play on a team. Basketball. A great game that was originated in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891. Basketball was created by a canadian gym coach who used peach baskets when it was raining and snowing outside. Now the sport is played all over the world. One of the most popular sports in the world, and I hated it. I hated this God given sport, until 4 years ago. When something great happened to me on April 17 2010 I turned my perspective on basketball. I really hated basketball from the beginning but then I changed throughout the way.
According to Wikipedia basketball Naismith came up with first 13 rules for the new game. At first there was 18 kids and 9 on each team. The objective of the game was to throw the ball into the basket nailed to the lower railing of gym balcony. Every time somebody scored a point the game was paused, so they could get the ball out of the basket using a ladder. After a while they got sick of pausing and climbing to get the ball, the bottom of the basket was removed. The first ever public game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 11, 1892.
The game of basketball originally started off with thirteen basic rules. One of the rules Dr. James Naismith created was, “No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking, or tripping in any way of an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul: the
He got to thinking and started combining ideas from other games to make the game of what it is known today as basketball. Naismith invented this game in 1891 (Faurschou).
Where did the history of basketball start out and where will it be in the future? These are some of the many questions that will be talked about during my time writing this essay. Some of the many questions that will be answered my be controversial to some and interesting for others. There are many ways I can talk about basketball but in this essay the points I make will come from historical facts and analysis. This is an essay that will tell you the reader about the origin of basketball and where it is headed.
The first subject I will talk about is the history of Basketball. Basketball was created by a man named James Naismith in 1891. James was told to teach a P.E. class at the YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was told to come up with a game to entertain the boys being coached by him, the requirements were that it could be played indoors though due to the fact that is was winter and freezing cold outside. (Basketball in America: A History par.1) James recalled a game the he and his friends played when they were young. The game was called or so they called it, “duck on the rock”, the idea of the game was to throw a small rock at a larger one in hopes of knocking it off a boulder. He also thought of a time where he saw rugby players, instead of throwing a ball into a net they would throw it into a trash can. He looked for a box but instead he found a peach basket so he put it up on a wall and grabbed a soccer ball. (It’s cool to think of the fact that maybe if he used a box, today we would be using one too which would make the game tremendously harder) the main point of the game was to throw the ball into the basket. A cool fun fact was the according to “Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about
The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym. Every time someone scored a point, the game was stopped so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. After a while, they decided to remove the bottom of the fruit baskets so it would be easier to retrieve the bell. The first public basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.
However, the concepts and ideas of the original rules are still in effect today. Major rule changes over the years have adjusted the number of players, court boundaries, dribbling, and the elimination of a jump ball after every made basket. In the mid 1930's, intersectional compettition led to a standardization of rules throughout the counrty. Standardization of rules led to adjustments in; team size, substitutions, baskets, backboards, the ball, scoring, timing, shot clock, fouls, free throws, passing, dribbling, out of bounds, mid court line, three second area, center jump, goal tending, offensive basket interference, dunking, game coaching, and the integration of women's basketball in
How has the amount of players on the court at a time changed since creation? When Dr. Naismith had his class at the YMCA, he planned to let everybody play at once, but only having 18 people in that class, it was hard to determine whether or not large amounts of players on the court at a time would work, they played with nine on nine. Early leagues only had two teams because there was
During the winter of 1892 in a town in Massachusetts a physical education teacher, Dr. James Naismith, at a YMCA school created a game where young men could play indoors instead of going outside in the freezing cold. To get prepared for the game, Dr. Naismith came up with some rules for the game, gathered two peach baskets for hoops and a soccer ball and he coached the first basketball game in history.
