His support of the Revolution gave him instant credibility, but that is the least of his frequent offerings. One of his contributions was when he was sent to France during the Revolution to try to get the French to support the cause. He was an instant celebrity in France and his stature opened new doors to people in high places. In result, France agreed to aid the Revolution. Without the support of the French, the Revolution most likely wouldn't have been successful.
