In the late 18th century in the United States of America, Americans struggled to find their “American Identity” as a new nation. Throughout this time period, ideas and values changed with the formation of a new nation. However, influences made by Benjamin Franklin help shape the “American Dream”. Benjamin Franklin helped define American success with The Autobiography and Poor Richard’s Almanack to help the new Americans obtain their identity. After the American Revolution, colonist’s ideals evolved to American ideals and values. The main ideal was to strive for moral perfection. In The Autobiography, Benjamin Franklin highlights three key ways to do so: self-examination, to embrace flaws, and hard work. Franklin highlights a unique method to achieve moral perfection. He created a list of thirteen values and made a planner. Each week he would work on one virtue. Then after, he mastered that virtue, he would move on to the next. Each day he would have a self-examination to figure out what he should work on next. However, Franklin soon discovers moral perfection is impossible and writes an anecdote.
