How Did Black Lives Matter?

They Matter For decades black Americans have been treated as animals, looked at as if they are monsters, and killed like bugs. Actions like Police brutality and racism is what caused Black Lives Matter. The creation of the Black Lives Matter was a response by the black community to give a voice to black Americans affected by the increase of wrongful deaths due to the law enforcements and vigilantes across the country. This has been going on for so long that it seems like we are stuck in the past. For years, even decades black Americans have had to live the struggle of being equal. Even when things are going good and we think we finally have the same rights, something happened to change that. It is time to shed a light on the real purpose of Black Lives Matter and why they are important to today's society.

One of the the most controversial topics of discussion in our nation is the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement has sparked up immensely because of the President in office right now, Donald Trump, and many events transpiring around the nation. The country is at separation between the people who think that Black Lives Matter is a real issue and the people who think it is not. Without a doubt, people need to be considered equally, no matter what is said at the end of the day. America was founded on the idea that every man that walks on the soil will have just as equal opportunities as the next, no matter the race. Three essential reasons people are determined to fight for this cause is to end job discrimination, stop police brutality, and gain equal rights within society.

A necessary and common fight for equality has been one that has survived throughout all of man’s existence. Due to recent racial divide and the product of racial profiling, a movement has risen up to combat these common issues. The most recent and most well-covered is the Black Lives Matter Movement. Even though it has been lauded by some media sources and individuals as the next great movement to champion for civil rights, the Black Lives Matter movement is not the same as the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s nor is it likely to be as successful. If the Black Lives Matter Movement continues with discrepancies in ideology, lack of clear leadership, and trends of hate, the movement is doomed to fail.

Throughout history, black people have been hurt and battered physically, mentally, and emotionally by white people and those who believe they are superior. From the beginning of the 19th century to the ongoing 21st century, black identity has evolved in accordance to the struggles African Americans are facing at the time. From the abolitionist movement to the Black Lives Matter movement, the evolving issues facing black identity in the struggle for equality and constitutional rights can be seen through the literature and writing by the black leaders of the time.

Jackie Robinson will be remembered mainly because he broke the MLB color barrier. This means that he was the first African American player in the MLB. However, he also did many other amazing things such as fighting in the Army and being the rank of Commander. Lastly, he will be remembered because he gave African Americans hope that segregation will get better and that you can do anything you believe in. It is the same argument that has been raging on throughout history, what lives have more value? Race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, sex, religious beliefs, these are just a few of the many attributes of a person’s identity that define their place in the hierarchy of society’s worth. Sure we would like to believe that we are better than that, but the sad truth is that we use these identifiers to judge the worth of a person. People would like to believe that a person is not judged by their outward appearance, that we have moved beyond such prejudice concepts and have accepted the fact that everyone is equal. The correlation between race and the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers has come into question in our society, and there has been an outcry on police misconduct due to racial injustices.

The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.

The concept behind Black Lives Matter is nothing new. This can be seen in a book I recently read called Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. In fact, Coates early views on the racial divide mirror the ideas behind the movement. Coates often spoke of “The Dream” of Americans. This Dream communicates that America is a perfect little nation that is expunged of guilt and responsibility of all the horrible things that have occurred in the past, such as racism and slavery. The Dream is primarily a white ideal.

the focus of Black Lives Matter is being articulated less as a demand for specific civil or political rights, and more as a broader claim for “black humanity.” Martin Luther King also used the language of human rights to internationalize the issue of racial inequality in the United States. BLM movement is following in king’s footsteps, taking a stance and demanding action. Both movements fight for freedom but in ways that seem to be opposite of the other, one in love, and one in hate.

Why did the Black Lives Matter movement begin? How did it come about? Is systematic oppression towards blacks a real enough issue in the United States in order for them to raise concern? I believe the movement wants to acknowledge that black people too deserve the justice they are currently not receiving.
