What impact did his discoveries and ideas have on society? Charles Darwin started as an unmotivated student with no real plans for his life. He never thought he would become anything special. Now, he is one of the most recognised and known scientists in the world. Darwin’s ideas and theories had a great impact on society and the world as we know it. Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12th, 1809 in a small town in west England called Shrewsbury. His father was Dr. R.W. Darwin, and his mother was Susannah Wedgwood Darwin, who died in July of 1817. Charles was the fifth of six children. He had three older sisters, Marianne, Caroline, and Susan; and one older brother, Erasmus. His younger sister, Catherine, was born when Charles was barely one year old.
They were a wealthy family; his father was a well known doctor and his mother had been left money by her late father, so Charles grew up comfortably. He came from a long line of doctors and scientists, so it was assumed that Charles would be a doctor as well. At age 16, he left with his brother to go to the University of Edinburgh. Two years later, he went to Christ’s College in Cambridge. He had been planning to become a physician; however, he soon learned that he couldn’t stand the sight of blood, so he changed courses.
