How Did Commedia Dell Arte Influence Modern Theatre

A “tragedy, for Shakespeare, is the genre of uncompensated suffering” (Dutton and Howard, 2003, p. 9). To really understand the play Othello is to truly understand a tragedy; thus, this researcher will analyze Aristotle’s view point and compare it to phrases (or quotes) from Shakespeare’s Othello.

Commedia dell’ arte translates to “comedy of the professional players” was introduced in Italy during the sixteenth century. Commedia usually contains eight stock characters (stereotypical fictional characters), one of these stock characters is Il Dottore which translates to “the doctor”. During the sixteenth century a “Dottore” was someone who studied each subject and had great knowledge upon it. In Commedia, the doctor claims to know everything and is able to give advice but, he ignores the knowledge of others and talks on about the things he thinks he has knowledge on.

Performance features of the performances were directed straight to the people. The amount of credit the audience gave the actors, determined the energy of the charcters. For example, if a crowd cheered Arlecchinos antics on, he would play this up by continuing it for a longer period of time. Such was the improvising nature of commedia conventions.
