The revolution in France was a quick process that takes over ten years before stability was finally recovering and Napoleon came to power. During the ten years there were many different types of government all with different ideas, however none of the governments didn’t really affect the peasants. The people in France became fed up. Fed up of paying taxes to sort out the massive financial chaos, fed up of paying for pointless wars and people just didn’t care enough to stop Napoleon rising to power.

The main political reason was that the members of the third estate occupied 97% of Frances population yet they had little to no political power. They had no control over their own government, rules, and regulations. One person, King Louis XVI, had all the power. On top of the third estate having little to no power at all, they barely had any land to live on. The third estate was 97% of France’s population yet they only owned 55% of the land. The French Revolution was a bloody civil war that lasted from the years 1789-1799. [1] The revolution arose out of hard economic times that had befallen France. Widespread famine and hunger, due to a grain shortage, rampaged through sections of the country. The economic crisis led to an increase in taxes on the lower classes, known as the third estate, to upkeep the lavish lifestyle of the nobility. Louis was able to use his citizens money how he pleased. People worked hard for their money and were struggling to make it as it is. Taxes were taking that money away. In the 18th century, the social classes were categorized as the First Estate, consisting of the clergy; the Second Estate, consisting of the aristocracy; and finally the Third Estate, including every remaining citizen; from the bourgeoisie (merchants, lawyers, businessmen) all the way to the poor peasants of the land. All the members of the first two estates were privileged in law and taxation. Moreover, there was virtually no way to move up the social ladder unless you were born into it, consequently, raising anger among the bourgeoisie since, despite their equivalence in wealth as certain nobles, they still had lower living conditions than the first two estates and were considered the minority.

Although there is not one exact reason for the start of the French Revolution, factors through economy, politics, and social structure influenced the circumstances of the revolution. Some believe that it took place over social inequality in the estates and the fact that right before the revolution the some people in France were denied basic right and were living in substantially poor conditions. The French government was also ever changing. Over the span of 24 years the government changed roughly 7 or 8 times. This is just one example of many conveying the instability of France and unpropitious they were during this time period.
