How Did Forrest Gump Change American History

     Historically speaking, the movie relates the United States history poorly. It has many accuracies historically, but the problems far outweigh them.

“No event in the past half-century of American history has commanded a morep rominent place in the public consciousness than the Vietnam War” (Hall xi), a rightfully said statement. Lasting from 1960-1975, it is America’s longest war and changed the United States politically, socially, and culturally during that period. In the early 1970s, the voting age was lowered to 18, largely because of the war. Also, Vietnam was one of the first wars in which African Americans largely participated. Lastly, Vietnam changed America culturally by causing mistrust in government. In the 1960s through early ‘70s, the Vietnam War changed America in ways that nothing had ever done before.

Forrest Gump is set in Georgia in the early 1960’s, when Forrest is sitting at a bus stop, with flashbacks recounting the time back to his birth in 1942. Because Forrest is sitting at the bus stop telling his life story to anyone who stops to listen, very little of the film takes place in the present tense; rather, the plot takes place in the past as Forrest recounts his life experiences. Throughout the film, many populist tropes surface within Forrest’s life, showing how Forrest lived in a time where he was unknowingly exposed—and even contributing—to a populist way of life that challenged the way average people viewed society in the United States. Forrest Gump integrates the tropes of populism with the genres of romance, war, and adventure, sending a powerful message to viewers of how they ought to view the world, at a time when corruption and impurity dominated society.

Forrest Gump is a movie that was released in the summer of 1994 and is based on a novel by the same name that was written by Winston Groom almost a decade earlier in 1986. The movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Paramount Pictures. The film features Tom Hanks as the main character Forrest Gump who is a slow-witted character but also has a heart of gold and is extremely courageous. The supporting cast consists of Gary Sinise (Lt. Dan), Robin Wright (Forrest’s mother) , Sally Field(Jenny) , Mykelti Williamson (Bubba), among others. In this critique I will be summarizing the plot and analyzing what I liked and disliked about the movie and whether it stands the test of time.

In the movie Hacksaw Ridge it did helped me understand to topic of the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. The movie helped me picture the historical portrayal of Private Doss saving each and every soldier that fought in the war. Is showed the way he was strong saving them and also for keeping his faith in God throughout his position in the military. Doss had enlisted as a medic and refused to carry a rifle. In reality there are men in the military that refuse to pick up a rifle due to them having a promise with God and/or obey the 10 commandments. I understand it better after the movie because of them showing how he did it saving the soldiers in the hacksaw ridge, the reaction of the soldiers when the captains ordered him to pick up a rifle, and how the Japanese quickly killed them as soon as they saw them. Throughout the movie I just thought first how strong he was to go back and save any soldier that was alive because nobody now a day has the guts to do that and second to keep his faith and promise with god. Also for his dad not accepting Doss and his brother to join the army, and the still joined to protect their country. The movie Red Tails showed me that it doesn’t matter what color, heritage, or male/female you can do anything. It was the Tuskegee Airmen that were African Americans that were servicemen during the World War II.
