How Did George Washington Respond To Foreign Issues In The United States?

George Washington’s legacy is felt throughout American politics and customs with his precedents set in mind to ensure the welfare of America. The four precedents which held the most impact were his precedents of having a two-term presidency, maintaining neutrality in foreign affairs, convening the cabinet to for advice, and using force to uphold law. These four precedents had great impact and were pivotal in securing America’s future and maintaining America’s stability. The issues of foreign affairs is one which determine what paths America would take in relations with other nations.

Washington was not interested, nor wanted, permanent alliances as it could backfire on the U.S. Washington did not want different political parties as it would tear this country apart and he felt his job was to unify the U.S, not to tear it apart. Washington’s job was to make a stronger bond and he wouldn’t accomplish this by favoring one political party out of many, and that’s why he felt there should be no separation of political powers. Washington made sure to remind them to keep their liberty and freedom, because without it there whole work was for nothing.

George Washington also proclaimed the neutrality of the United States in all international conflicts. In my opinion, that’s a very important contribution to the success of the United States in the years to come. Not only did it help keep the United States safe from conflicts with other nations, but it also let every nation know that we aren’t here to make conflicts with them either. After his presidency, George Washington has explains many possible dangers and concerns he has for the for the up and coming nation that he spent 8 years so heavily devoted toward. There were many issues during Washington’s presidency so he writes a farewell address discussing the issues and giving Americans some wise words of advice. Some of the issues that Washington brings up include staying out of other nation’s issues and worry about ourselves, to not divide our nation by forming different political parties with different ideas, and pay off the newly acquired national debt. He explains all of these issues and more in his farewell address. He also says that if the constitution needs to be changed it should be done so legally and not by rebellion which Americans tend to do.

When George Washington became the first president of the United States in 1789 the young republic faced many pressing issues. The state needed to build a sound economy, create a stable polotical system and preserve national independence. .

Another big point that Washington stressed was that becoming alliances with Foreign nations would endanger the United States. He believed that

The main argument that is presented by Washington is that the United States should not fall into the evils of political parties and that the United States should not concern itself with foreign wars. Washington does not hide his argument is obvious for political parties as Washington says “In contemplating the causes which may disturb our Union, it occurs as matter of serious concern that any ground should have been furnished for characterizing parties by geographical discriminations, Northern and Southern, Atlantic and Western; whence designing men may endeavor to excite a belief that there is a real difference of local interests and views” (Washington). However, his second point is somewhat hidden as he does not say avoid foreign wars, but Washington does say “Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humor or caprice” (Washington). By Washington saying “entangle our peace” it leads one to believe he is speaking of war. Also by saying “and prosperity in the toils of European ambition” Washington is saying why let our chance to be great rest in someone else’s hands other than ours.

1. Washington’s Farewell Address- an essay George Washington wrote to stay neutral from foreign affairs. “We need to stay focused on well-being of U.S. since we are a new country.” For the next 150 years, the U.S. didn’t sign an alliance. Isolationism formed from this address. Twice however, the US got involved in the European struggle. 1) in 1798 in opposition to France & 2) in 1813 in opposition to Great Britain. He basically said he was totally for the Neutrality Act & he also said to avoid political parties. IT will only cause disagreements. He made this address because he didn’t want to serve his 3rd session and made the tradition of 2 per president.

On September 19, 1796, George Washington, the first president of the United States, delivered his farewell address to the American people. In his address, he informed Americans that he would not run for a third term as president, but that he cared about America and would care about America until the day he died. Since he cared, he decided that he would deliver advice for the future on what the American people should and should not do. The advice he gave the American people could have helped them with problems they would face in the future. Based on President George Washington’s experiences, he advised Americans to stay united as a nation, follow the constitution, and stay neutral, because he predicted that these three issues could be a problem for the new nation and future Americans.

Washington’s third piece of advice was about staying neutral. He believed that becoming too attached or too adverse to one country would hurt the United States. This was shown when Washington said, “...history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government…” Washington has seen the negative effect that bias can have on a nation. Knowing that hate for one country can lead a government to hastily break ties with another, he warns that we should not develop an antipathy towards any nation. George Washington was our very 1st President of the United States of America. His presidency took time during war debt due to the American Revolution during a time of European conflicts. Political parties were starting to form and he had to act efficiently to make the right decisions which would benefit the people of the United States. Despite these difficulties, George Washington protected the peoples’ rights better than John Adams because he worked to keep America safe and allowed citizens to speak out to their government. Washington wanted to protect America, along with its citizens, to the best of his ability and he showed this by making the Neutrality Proclamation. In his speech he states, “Whereas it appears that a state of war exists between...Great Britain...on the one part and France on the other...the...interest of the United States require that [it] should with sincerity and good faith adopt and pursue a conduct friendly and impartial [neutral] toward [both countries].”

One of Washington’s major points is staying out of Europe’s wars and conflicts. Washington believed that we should not follow through with the strong isolationistic beliefs up to the first war. It only occurred during the World War II that we had gotten away from it. To avoid partisanship, Washington didn’t even want the political parties to follow us at all; obviously we did indeed have two strong political parties, which neither completed its responsibilities and had the encouragement of determination to solve the serious issues that shouldn’t have been about the political parties that most had belong or involved in that don’t actually know anything or about the politics of what both parties were doing.

From the beginning, we can take note on George Washington's praise towards the country and Government of the Union. He expresses deep gratitude and congratulating the successful progress. As said by Washington, "...the rising credit and respectability of our Country—the general and increasing good will towards the Government of the Union...". He repeated the words of people and peace. Washington remembers to involve the people of the country and knows they helped contribute in the making of America. George Washington stated, "By convincing those, who are entrusted with the public administration, that every valuable end of Government is best answered by the enlightened confidence of the people...". The major point that Washington heavily address is the eradication of political parties within the US. According to Washington political parties "agitate[s] the community with ill-founded and false alarms;" meaning that political parties cause a disruption within the community's cohesion. Political parties can cause a huge schism between groups of people. Since parties have a certain platform that expresses a groups moral, economical, and social views, it can be easy and often common place for those of opposing parties to be have tension. Washington knew that this would be the case when if political parties continued. Each party would have their own agenda meaning that they would focus on the parties interest and not truly advocate for the countries

Washington's advice to practice “good faith and justice” was not realistic. Washington’s advice was not realistic because not everyone was about good faith and justice. Especially when trusting other nations, that was difficult even for President Washington. He did not want to be sucked into other nations wars or problems but having good faith and justice can only go so far. It could only go so far because Washington only wanted temporary alliances and they would not last long, also, how much love and hate there would be toward the other countries.
