Hip-Hop music and the sub genre, Gangster Rap, has deep roots dating back from as early as the 15th and 16th century but since the mid 1980’s and early 1990’s this sub culture has taken over mainstream and has had a negative effect on both Hip-Hop as a culture and the american society. The word rap was first used in Brittain and meant to hit or to strike. As the word evolved over the centuries the definition of the word changed to mean to speak or to talk. The word rap also has many ties to the African griots dating back thousands of years ago. These griots where the village storytellers that would pass down the history of their family through story and song as well as communicate current local events to the people of the village. This was very similar to today’s emceeing techniques of getting the crowd involved. Not only did the singing become a way to cope with the hardships but they also used a type of “rapping” to communicate to each other while their owner or master was present. The slaves had to learn to speak in a broken very fast paced way of speaking and they taught themselves how to play on words and communicate to each other making sure they were the only ones able to understand the conversation. Since then this way of communicating evolved into a very popular musical style in the United States and around the world as Hip-Hop and Rap. The commercial music industry has since greatly profited off of this style and form of music grossing nearly one billion dollars annually. Due to the increased popularity of gangster rap in the American culture, many people of all ages misunderstand the meaning behind this subgenre of Hip-Hop music, whether it be the young kids and teens glorifying the violence and drug use or the politicians of the 1980’s and 1990’s not really hearing what was really being said in this newly developing music
Rap music is derived from Hip Hop culture which is deeply rooted in the African American community. The word, rap, has a Middle English origin. Originally, rap means to beat or strike. Beginning in the 1960s, African Americans gave the word another definition. In the black community, rap meant that someone was conversing about everyday life. However, Africans who were captured against their own will would tell stories while playing instruments way before the idea of rap was conceptualized as it is today. The origin of
Hip-Hop as well as many other artistic cultural forms we practice today can be related back to African culture and various traditions. Author of The Roots and Stylistic Foundations of the Rap Music and Tradition, Cheryl Keyes, discuss’ the spirit, style, tradition, emotions, culture and the delivery of music. Keyes says that many of these practices can be traced back to the West Afrikan Bardic Tradition in particular. When asking many old-school, and culturally involved hip-hop artists about the roots and origins of rap/hip-hop music many of them will refer to Africa.
In order to understand hip-hop dance, it is important to recognize hip-hop music and where it came from. Many scholars of rap music relate the founding of rap to African and African American oral and musical traditions, specifically African griots and storytellers. They link the rhythm of rap to the use of drums in Africa and to African American music in the United States, from slave songs and spirituals to jazz and R&B. Scholars have found very interesting connections between rap music and Black nationalist traditions (traditions historically practiced by black people that serve as part of their racial identity). Rap is similar to the “call and response of the black church, the joy and pain of the blues, the jive talk and slang of the hipsters and jazz musicians, the boasting of street talk, the sidesplitting humor of comedians, and the articulateness of black activists.” All of these African American oral traditions, including rap, can be traced back to West African oral traditions. In traditional African societies, the spoken word and oral culture included poetry, storytelling, and speaking to drumbeats. The links between rap music and African American oral and musical traditions demonstrate that hip-hop music represents more than just sound. It represents history. This aspect of it, in my opinion, makes this type of music very unique and makes it carry more value.
In 1993, Ishmael Beah along with his brother Junior and their friend Talloi experienced a new kind of music called "Rap". These young kids loved the expression of rap and hip hop and the culture behind it. Since it wasn't very popular in Sudan. They had organized a rap group when he was just eight and had been rapping together ever since. They had first seen that kind of music on television and met every other weekend to study it. They didn’t even know for a long time what it was called, but were impressed with the fact that black fellows knew how to speak English really fast and to the beat. Later on, Junior had gone to secondary school where other boys had taught him more about foreign music and dance. This is how they came to know about hip-hop.
Shakur’s exposure to violence and the arts at an early age helped him to become a successful rapper following a prison term. Pac released an album called “All Eyez On Me” while imprisoned. It later became the best album of that time. After releasing that album it impacted Shakur to make more music to fulfill his dreams as the 90’s best rapper.
On September 13, 1996 on of the greatest rappers of all time, Tupac Amaru Shakur died. Even though Tupac no longer roams the earth, he and his songs are known by people young and old. His songs just like many other artists are still relevant to American society. I listen to and analyzed Tupac’s song changes. The lyrics are powerful and have influenced the rap industry to this day.
This chapter is about the birth of hip-hop in the south Bronx and how African and African American culture greatly influenced rap/hip-hop. The evolution of rap evolved from spoken word, which sprung from African American tradition. However, many fail to realize Afro-Caribbean culture’s emergence on the evolution of hip-hop. Younger generations admire their favorite rappers and artist because they embody the same struggles they face in their life. Tiongson later goes on to stress the enormous impact hip hop had on an African American culture that poets and artist do not realize. Although artist may not see it, their work has become a positive light for young kids in the black community.
The form of music that we know as rap is heavily influenced by earlier African American music forms. Modern day rap, originates from it’s previous form of gangsta rap. Gangsta rap is an extremely controversial form of music, even to this day, people argue about how “safe” it is

Hip hop music has affected on teenager's school work, social interactions and moods. Hip hop music has a negative effect on teenagers because its powerful. Hip hop changes the way teenagers in this generations today speak, think and act.
Rap music, also known as hip-hop, is a popular art form. Having risen from humble origins on the streets of New York City during the mid-1970s, hip-hop has since become a multifaceted cultural force. Indeed, observers say, hip-hop is more than just music. The culture that has blossomed around rap music in recent decades has influenced fashion, dance, television, film and—perhaps what has become the most controversially—the attitudes of American youth. For many rappers and rap fans during it’s early time, hip-hop provided an accurate, honest depiction of city life that had been considered conspicuously absent from other media sources, such as television. With a growing number of rap artists within this period, using hip-hop as a platform to call for social progress and impart positive messages to listeners, the genre entered a so-called Golden Age
It has been 30 years since Hip-Hop was first “introduced” to the world. Whether it be fashion or politics, this musical genre/culture plays a huge role in everyday life and has generated billions of dollars across the globe. In this paper I will be discussing when, where, and how Hip-Hop was created, “old school Hip-Hop, “Hip-Hop’s Golden Age”, “Hardcore rap” “Gangsta rap”, “G-Funk”, 21st century Hip-Hop, and how Hip-Hop affects society.
Back in the past, rap music was first started in African Tribal communities. They used music as a way to relate the tribe's history in the form of a story and added a beat and a rhythm to it (Howard). Today, rap is used for the same reason, which is to tell stories. Beneath all the profanity, there is a hidden true meaning. If back then people used music to tell stories about things and express his or her self, then people do the same today.

The evolution of hip-hop continues to expand to our present day. It has become a movement and culture that began 30 to 40 years ago. Kool Herc (DJ) is known as being a founder of hip-hop in 1967 when he made his first gig at his sister's birthday party. Alterations within the culture have taken the originality to a whole new level with technology taking its jump and commercialism overrunning the music industry. (Palvic, 2006)
Throughout history, music has been used to express the feelings of people or groups whom may have no other outlet to express themselves. The best example of this occurrence would be the lower class of America’s use of rap music. Rap music started out as a fun variation of disco with the purpose to make people dance and enjoy themselves, but it later transformed into one of the best outlets to express the struggles of poverty in the United States. The genre gained popularity when the song “Rapper 's Delight” hit the charts in the early eighties; rap evolved into a plethora of different styles from there, Gangster Rap formed with NWA in the late eighties, and rap really hit it’s zenith in the mid nineties. Modern rap began in the early starts of the twentieth century. Because of the storytelling that rappers do in the music, it gained notice in the inner city where the demographic could relate. Many young teen in the inner city environment built dream to be famous rappers just like their own favorite artists . Rap connects to me by its style, its purpose, and its political incorrectness.
would not have an impact on them. According to McLeod (2007) certain behaviors are either due to genetic disposition or are learned. It is therefore reasonable to state that a child can grow up listening to a certain type of music, but would not necessarily act it out.
