“Heil Hitler!” This phrase was used a copious time during Hitler’s reign. Although Hitler had a traumatizing childhood, he was able to achieve both political and military success.
Although Hitler’s childhood life was tumultuous, he did not yield to the barriers that would prevent him from having success. Being born to Alios and Klara Hitler on April 20, 1889 in Braunnau am Inn, Austria, Adolf Hitler was the fourth out of six children. In 1898, Hitler began attending local schools near Linz. Tragically, his younger brother, Edmund, died two years later. His father passed away in 1903. His mother, who he loved dearly, allowed him to drop out of school at age 16. Joining the DAP in 1919, Hitler was one of the 40 members in the group. Soon after joining the party, they changed their name to the NSDAP. Hitler became chairman in 1921. Within five months of becoming chairman, Hitler declared himself Fuhrer of the now 3000-member group. After reluctantly losing control of the party, Hitler reimposed his leadership as ultimate arbiter in the year 1926. The NSDAP gained more and more popularity, and eventually Hitler decided to run for president but lost, twice. Luckily, he followed the old saying from William Edward Hickson, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.” His persistence paid off, when he became the chancellor in 1933. As chancellor he passed the Enabling Act, which legally gave Hitler the right to be, in essence, a dictator. When Hidenburg, the dictator, died, Hitler seized and exploited this opportunity, and merged his position as chancellor with the position of dictator, effectively giving himself complete control over Germany.
