H: “Survival of the fittest” is a common phrase originating from the theory of natural selection. But what does it take to survive? B: Hyeonseo Lee proved she was a true survivor by escaping from North Korea, but returning to save her family. Aron Ralston displayed traits of a survivor when his arm was pinned to a crevice wall in Blue John Canyon, yet he never stops conceiving new ideas on how to escape. Likewise, Alison DiLaurentis and Cece Drake of the hit show “Pretty Little Liars” had to survive in hiding while they, and everyone they cared about were tormented and threatened by an anonymous being. T: Lee’s courage, Ralston’s cleverness, and Alison and Cece’s endurance show their audiences what it takes to be a survivor. C: In the case of Hyeonseo Lee of North Korea, her courage showed people what a survivor looks like. E: While sharing her story, she …show more content…
E: In one instant, Alison watched as “A”, an anonymous, sadistic stalker, crashed a car into her best friend’s house. A: Alison desperately wanted to help, but also knew to keep “A” from killing her and everyone she loves, but also knew that she must stay in the shadows. It was hard to stay away at times, but she had to endure the pain so she could find out who “A” is and take him/her down. E: As for Cece Drake, she had to endure in other ways. Her family didn’t accept her for who she was, or who she was turning into. Her parents checked her into Radley Sanitarium when she was a young girl, and kept her hidden from the rest of the family. A: Cece endured all those years without a family. When she finally escaped, she was shunned by her mother and father and had to endure living in a place where nobody knew who she was. Finally, her strength payed off when her sister took her in and loved her for who she was. L: Alison and Cece’s strength and endurance proved to their audience that they are
Rick Yancey’s science fiction novel, “The Last Star,” takes place in a modern day society where the government has become corrupted and is now working against the human race. Most of the people left after the 5 waves, barely even try to stay alive. They know the odds of surviving is a lot to a little, so they think what is the point of staying alive a week longer. Although, a group of 6 people try their hardest and their best to stay alive. These 6 people are probably the only 6 people in their world that is trying to stay alive. And because they try their best, they end up surviving much longer than other people. This suggests that a possible theme for Rick Yancey’s “The Last Star” is that however much
The survivalist culture is an intriguing American subculture whose main focus is to prepare for a tragedy such as the apocalypse or nuclear warfare. The concept of survivalism came about after the devastation from World War II, as well as the Cold war and the conflict between Korea and Vietnam (Crawford, 2017). These events began to spark interest in preparing for many types of disasters (Crawford, 2017). Over the years, the concept of survivalism developed to oppose the increase in society’s complexity (Crawford, 2017).
Taylor’s mother worked hard to keep her from “fitting the mold” of girls in this town; get pregnant in high school, get married at a young age, and stay in this town forever. Taylor did not want this life for herself so she did everything in her power to make a better life for herself. Throughout the course of the novel Taylor grew as a person because she learned the importance of family, opened her eyes to new experiences, and grew to be more apparent of the realities of her world.
In this essay I will write about all three of these. First of all, hardship that the characters have to endure is when Billie Jo’s best friend Livie moves away to california. At this time Billie Jo is very distraught but she has to stay positive and not lose hope. To stay positive Billie Jo takes up all her free time by helping her Ma out with the chores at the house. Another way she takes up her time
The art of survival is something that is not easily learned. For some, however, it is something that comes from a natural desire to be defiant and rebellious. In the novel Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand, protagonist Louie Zamperini fights for survival through a number of trials that are presented to him. His life takes him from being a troubled child, to an Olympic runner, to a bomber lost at sea, to POW in some of the worst camps Japan could conjure. Louie not only survives these trials, he stands up and goes directly against the normality and ease of submission and faces his adversity head on. Throughout the novel, Louie shows that his ability to survive stems from his natural urge to rebel and defy anything that he deems too controlling in his life.
Through focusing on nutrition, technological resources, and having a survival-type mindset, the characters were able to prevail. In the
A survivor is a person who simply makes it through an event, no matter the circumstance. More specifically, a survivor is an individual who gets through alive, either without a scratch on their body, or beaten down to the bone. When Lily Owens, Equality 7-2521, and George Milton keep running away from their problems, and finally stay put, with no harm as previously experienced, they are categorized as survivors. To be a survivor is to be a remainder, who keeps living, which is what these three main characters are doing, but in different circumstances to have been grouped as survivors. The universal aspect of the survivor is known as the one who ‘goes with the flow’, is easy going, deals with change well, and obviously comes out of an event

Survival is living on the hope that better things are yet to come in your life. Right now in our country people survive because of hope and the belief that people are good and they will help them out. People survive when they are homeless on the streets only because of the people who are good at heart and give them food or money to buy clothing for the winter. Gerta survived because of her family and friends. Anne Frank survived because she believed that “Despite all the evil going on in the world I still believe that all people are good at heart.”
In the book, Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler, it presents a perfect example of a Survival of the fittest lifestyle. Only the best, the smarter, and the stronger ones, is able to survive, while the weaker individuals will be killed or dead. Lauren Olamina, the main character and her group travels towards the north by finding freedom. Many people did not have the mindset to be as strong as Lauren to survive, but she was extremely careful. She has always looked out for potential enemies wanting to harm or kill, but she was also creating allies to build her Earthseed community.
“Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air, but only for one second without hope.” (Unknown) People’s lives are plagued by loss, disease, and tragedy. How they surviving such adversity shapes who they are as individuals, but more importantly, it brings out their inherent ability to step up to the challenges life presents. When given a cause to fight for, one can survive through grim calamities that would otherwise be fatal.
