Germany began doing this before WWI which caused raised tensions throughout Europe as well as some other countries militarizing too and when a country builds a new, big military they want to use it. Imperialism is defined in the dictionary as being a " The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by establishing economic and political hegemony over other nations" (p 681 American Heritage college Dictionary). Usually people associate imperialism as being the domination of a small country by a larger, more powerful country, usually to the advantage of the larger country. At the beginning of the nineteenth century most of the countries in Europe were involved in imperialism. Each country had it's own motives for wanting to gain an empire and some of the reason were Economic, Political, Religious and Exploitation.

They were wrong.” (Textbook WWI) In 1914, European leaders thought a balance of powers would be a good chance for the European countries, so no one country could overpower another. Germany was not ok with that change, and formed a alliance with Italy and Austria-Hungry, this alliance was called the Triple Alliance. In response, Russia, Great Britain, and France formed what was called the Triple Entente. A Serbian group called the Black Hand also was important during this time. In 1914, imperialism is one of the main underlying causes of WWI because of the Triple Alliance/ Triple Entente, strengthening military forces, and the population of the countries.
