Ultimately an invention, able to transport goods, weapons and people in a remarkably rapid time was made. As everyone knows once a product is made there is always a need for improvement. In 2005 inventor Sebastian Thurn revamped the automobile up to the point where one can actually drive without physically having to maneuver the vehicle. Ever since this innovation became available, car makers have thoroughly studied the mechanics in autonomous cars. Now, they claim that these vehicles are extremely beneficial. Self-commanded automobiles are now being implemented to help the economy, reduce accidents, and allow easy hands off transportation.

Driverless vehicles, or the self-driving car, is defined as any car with features that allow it to accelerate, brake, and steer a car’s course with limited or no driver interaction (BI Intelligence par.4). When most people hear the term “driverless vehicle”, people instantly think cars that drive all by themselves, meaning that the vehicles are able to completely control themselves while the driver can sit back in the driver’s seat as if they were the passenger. The reality is that it will actually be a few years before fully self-automated vehicles will make their debut on the road, but for now the car companies and manufacturers are adding self-driving features of the latest models of cars. Imagine being able to get into your car and simply typing in your desired destination, and then reclining your seat to watch a movie or text a friend. During this time, the car is basically driving itself. Well, soon this may be possible this invention is called an autonomous car. An autonomous car, or driverless/ robotic car, is a car that is designed to drive without human interference. Essentially, drivers can program their destination into the car’s GPS system and then sit back and relax. Some of the world’s largest car companies are currently creating autonomous vehicles, such as Audi, Toyota, Volvo, Mercedes, and countless others. The driverless vehicle is now becoming a clearer and more present reality, and has been discussed and planned for decades. The autonomous vehicle offers significant benefits, but raises many questions and difficulties.

For decades the thought of a car that could drive itself has been a model of the future, but now, that model is becoming a reality. The potential benefits of adding an autonomous vehicle (AV) to the roadways are limitless, they span from improved safety to the convenience and luxury of the driver. Companies have already gained the right to test their cars in certain states. Once proven safe, the public will slowly but surely integrate autonomous vehicles into their lives. Autonomous cars will be a substantial benefit to society because they improve automobile safety, efficiency, and the overall convenience of the vehicle.
Self-driving cars contain groundbreaking components such as sensors for motion detection, interiors without brakes or pedals, electric batteries, a pre-programed database of how to respond to situations, along with many other features. When “human error, distracted driving, and so on are responsible for 90 percent or more of car accidents today, and 32,000 plus people die on U.S. roads every year,” (Lin, “The Robot Car of Tomorrow May Just Be Programmed to Hit You.”) and “the average American commuter spends 38 hours a year stuck in traffic,” self-driving cars of the future seem to promise exponential decrease in traffic, vehicle accidents, and wasted driving time (Werback, 1). They are designed to drive without human error, which in theory would create safer roads all over the world. “While human drivers can only react instinctively in a sudden emergency, a robot car is driven by software, constantly scanning its environment with unblinking sensors and able to perform many calculations before we are even aware of danger” (The Robot Car of Tomorrow May Just Be Programmed to Hit You”, 3). Nevertheless, there are many issues that arise when you take the wheel out of the hands of a human and put it into the hands of an algorithm, pre-programmed AI.
Over the year we have discovered that we are capable of letting a car make decisions for us on the road. “Americans have dreamed of driverless, horseless carriages since the ’30s, but their advent had to await the development of cheap and convenient computing power.” (Article 1) For centuries, we have let horses pull the buggies and they were capable of finding the way back home without out any help of the driver. “So, autonomous travel is nothing new.” (Article 1) Having a self-driving car is indeed a must, the simple fact that is going to better protect the human race.

Today, manufacturers sell cars that have the ability to assist the driver with navigation and parking, but the driverless cars currently being developed have the ability to drive themselves. These vehicles are fully automated and do not need a driver. They can move, steer, break, and navigate on their own, with no human intervention. Fully automated cars are not yet on the market but are currently being produced and tested. The talk of self-driving cars has been around for a while, but only has a futuristic idea. Self-driving cars no longer have to be a futuristic idea, according to an interview with Jeff Brown (2017). In the article, “This life changing technology is closer than people think,”self-driving cars are expected to be here within the next 18 months. Brown (2017) reported this life changing-technology will bring changes that will be difficult for people to wrap their heads around. Self-driving cars will bring changes such as the decrease of human driving error, lowering the cost of car insurance, and the beginning of a new industry.

The self-driving car facilitates the idea that humans don’t have to drive the car, but rather the car can drive itself. The cars recently debuted after being a concept in the making for several years. One example of the car in the making is Tesla, a car-producing company, that initiated a test-run of these cars calling the setting, “autopilot (Source 3).” The setting allowed the driver to sit back and relax as the car attempted to drive without assistance. The self-driving car should be a normal mode of transportation because they reduce accidents, are accessible to all ages, and are cost-efficient.
