How Did Lenin Come To Power In Russia

After the success of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, the former USSR, became “in 1917 the first socialist state … on the basis of his teachings [referring to Karl Marx’s teaching]” (White pg. 1). After a few weeks of the revolution’s success Lenin now became “the leader of the Bolshevik Party and head of the soviet state” (Pipes pg. 1). This meant that now a huge deal of problems faced Lenin, including eliminating opposition in order to maintain power and the construction of a the first ever communist state from only the ruins that were left behind from the Tsarist regime. Lenin had to use vicious means in order to overcome his problems, as described by Karlsson “the ends were thought to justify the means, or, as expressed in 1919 in the magazine of the Ukrainian security police: “For us, everything is allowed, as we are the first in the world to raise the sword not to oppress and enslave, but to liberate mankind of its shackles”. In an attempt to remedy the economy Lenin outlined the New Economic Policy (NEP). (Foster 1939). The New Economic Policy, as John Laver described it “Under NEP peasants were freed from the threat of requisitioning and were allowed to engage in private enterprise, selling surplus food in return for goods which they wanted, once they had paid their taxes.” (Laver pg. 78). This new policy must have created a huge relief for peasants because it allowed them greater freedom and a motivation to work harder in order to obtain a surplus. Lenin’s policy was not ‘very Marxist’ and Lenin knew that but he defended his policy by the excuse that it was a necessary step towards socialism because it was impossible to turn the country socialist overnight , hence his famous dictum ‘ Communism equals Soviet power plus the electrification of the whole country’.
