The Renaissance period started in the 14th century, and it didn’t end until the late 17th century. It was an intellectual movement that all started in Italy, and then eventually spread its way through out Europe. The word Renaissance itself means “rebirth.” This movement made a huge impact on the world by pulling us out of the Medieval Era. It was the rediscovery of classical antiquity. He painted The Last Supper, which is one of the most famous paintings there has ever been. The Last Supper was meant to portray the reaction of the disciples when Jesus said one of them would betray him. Leonardo was able to capture all twelve disciples with different facial expressions. The Last Supper has been studied countless times and still marvels people today. He is mostly known for the famous painting of The Mona Lisa. To this day, no one can be certain who the lady in the painting is. It is speculated that The Mona Lisa was not a woman at all, but a man in a dress. It was left a huge mystery, that people still question to this day. He never delivered The Mona Lisa to the person that commissioned him to paint it. The Renaissance man can be thought of as a man who lived during the period of Renaissance who had knowledge of and was interested in wide branches of knowledge. With the above given definitions it is not hard to see why Leonardo Da Vince personified the ideal of the Renaissance man. He was a brilliant inventor, mathematician scientist and perhaps one of the best artists that have ever lived. Looking at the life such a brilliant actor it is difficult to imagine if someone today could ever match his achievements but I think it is possible.
The Last Supper is famous because it depicts Jesus with his disciples and presumably Mary Magdalene before his arrest. The Mona Lisa is renowned because of her mysterious smile and the techniques used for the painting. The Vitruvian Man which was found in da Vinci's personal notebook is well-known because it displays that science and art can collaborate to form a masterpiece even though they are not the same. I believe the reason da Vinci painted The Last Supper, The Mona Lisa, and The Vitruvian Man was to change the way people saw art. With The Last Supper, the people were able to gain a more religious perspective because of Jesus and his twelve disciples.
