On April 4, 1967, Martin Luther King spoke publicly in New York, New York about USA's involvement in the Vietnam war. He strongly felt that the U.S. should stop immediately because it went against everything the U.S. is all about. The war in Vietnam was causing millions of innocent people to die, and Martin Luther King was fed up with the way we had intruded the basic human rights of the Vietnamese people. In Martin Luther King's "A Time to Break Silence" speech, Dr.King used refutations, reflections, and requests in order to effectively state why the war in Vietnam should come to a halt. Dr. King effectively used refutations in an effort to try and stop the troops from hurting innocent people in Vietnam. While he was in the process of doing this, many people questioned what he was doing. For example many people asked, "Why are you speaking about the war, Dr. King?" So, why would people question his decision to act and speak out against the war in …show more content…
He was trying to persuade the government bring back the troops from Vietnam. He did this by using a couple requests. Martin Luther King's first request was that the government needs to end all bombing in Vietnam. Many innocent people had died because of the bombings that were taking place. The troops didn't mean to do this, but since Vietnam had so many villages in the jungle many civilians were caught in the bombings. His next request was that the government needs to cease fire in hopes that a negotiation would take place. America had stormed into Vietnam in hopes they could start a negotiation. Unfortunately, we started firing on the Vietnamese soldiers and there wasn't a hope for any negotiations until we see asked fire. Mr. King's final request was to set a date that would remove all foreign troops from Vietnam that agreed with the 1954 Geneva agreement act. By removing the troops, this would help Vietnam to try and restore
His main point Martin Luther King Jr. was trying to convey was with the effort of all people, humans as a whole would be able achieve greater human rights, no matter the obstacles that come their way. The key points he brings up were that people should not give up and they should be ready to face the obstacles that they would have to face, such as his death. Also, another key point he brings up is that is everyone works together, they could achieve the equality of all peoples.
Martin Luther King starts by addressing the war that was happening in vietnam and he uses cause and effect of the war happening. One example he gave was the poverty program. A program that was meant to help the poor “both black and white”, he also went on to say “I knew that america would never invest the necessary funds or energy in rehabilitation of its poor so long as … vietnam continued”.
In Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech “Beyond Vietnam—A Time to Break Silence” (1967), Dr. King asserts that the war in Vietnam is totally immoral and has far reaching negative implications not only for Vietnam, but for The United States and the rest of the World as well. Dr. King’s purpose is to make the church leaders he is speaking to aware that the time has come for them to speak out loudly in opposition of the war in Vietnam. He offers many practical reasons for the opposition, as well as spiritual and moral reasons. He then outlines the history of the war in Vietnam, showing that he is not simply preaching about religious ideals. He also makes an
The Vietnam War made impacts on the movement back home. As in 1967 Martin Luther King Jr. even went against his own beliefs of not speaking out about the war he began preaching that it is truly sad to see African American people and the poor who can not make a living, being drafted (Doc C). Not only were they being drafted they were also dying at a much higher rate then just about every other group in society (Doc C). MLK also stated that these individuals were fighting to establish peace and rights over in Vietnam, while they did not even have these for themselves (Doc C). During the Vietnam years there still was some of the American population who supported the war, but would not speak out publicly about supporting the actions. This group was given the name the silent majority. Richard Nixon while in office spoke out about the group saying that the silent majority needs to speak out publicly as all the messages going around about the war are negative (Doc G). He also said in his speech that even though some people may not like the war everyone should help in the mind of creating peace in South Vietnam and that without everyone coming together in the nation that the US military could be defeated in the war (Doc
Dr King Jr achieved a sense of intensity with his voice, which was very necessary to reach his point. he use powerful words to to make you feel he pointed at the lies told in america at that time. he wanted the more perfect union and he said just that. Finally
His whole letter was a response to someone that criticized him for what he believed in and what he did to help his community. He was simply telling them why he did what he did. With all valid arguments, I personally believe Martin Luther King, Jr. achieved his purpose in explaining why he was an advocate against slavery and why he did such things for the sake of freedom. Even though there were so many more points he justified, for not only himself but his community, this essay is getting quite long. So, I completely agree with Martin Luther King, Jr.’s letter and I am moved by what he had to
While there are moments when we can see the personality and intentions of King come through his words as he speaks for himself to explain his motivations, especially when he talks about his passion for the Civil Rights Movement and his willingness to die for it, other times are a bit more obscure and we are left to wonder why King did some of what he did. For example, Garrow writes that King had expressed some hesitation to be included on a petition to help activist Carl Braden out of a charge of contempt of court. The wife of Carl, Anne, was disappointed that she would likely not get King's support. However, King changed his mind and phoned her to ask that she place his name on the petition because he had prayed over it and decided it was
Martin Luther King was firmly against the war in Vietnam. He successfully and eloquently pointed out many of the injustices and hypocrisies of the war. First the war disproportionately affects the poor by drawing away government resources that would otherwise benefit the poor. Second, the draft pulled mainly from poor communities as those more affluent could avoid the draft through college deferments or other means. As a result, poor communities suffer more as young men die. “We were taking the black young men who had been crippled by our society and sending them eight thousand miles away to guarantee liberties in Southeast Asia which they had not found in southwest Georgia and East Harlem”. (MLK- A Time to Break Silence Par 5) Third, that the American use of violence to solve its problems was both immoral and also destined to fail and incompatible with American values of self determination. Fourth, by supporting anti-communist despots we undermine our message of peace and prosperity. “...as we increased our troop commitments in support of governments which were singularly corrupt, inept, and without popular support. All the while the people read our leaflets and received the regular promises of peace and democracy and land reform. Now they languish under our bombs and
In response, Martin Luther King wrote a letter hoping that he and all of the other African Americans would be treated with racial equality. King simply wanted the unjust laws reversed. According to text “He was near exhaustion from stress, and his speeches increasingly alluded to his possible death, as in the speech at the Mason Temple Church in Memphis, Tenn., on April 3, 1968, the night before he died: “I’ve been to the mountain top and seen the promised land” (Funk & Wagnalls,2014). The next item we found was the assassination of JFK newspaper. John Fitzgerald Kennedy also known as Jack Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States of America. Some of the remarkable events that happened while John F Kennedy was holding office in the 60’s was the space race, the Cuban missile crisis, and the establishment of the Peace Corps. John F Kennedy had served in the navy as a secretary before being elected as president and also served as senator. JFK had two brothers who died in action in the WWII. John F Kennedy when elected as president one of his first steps was creating the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps and with this program volunteers would help the weak nations with things such as farming, education, and
People were angry at him because they thought should not have any voice in politics because he was just a civil right leader. People who loved him start to turn against him. Knowing people will turn against him but that did not stop him. People had misunderstood the reasons behind all of his movements, he fought against segregation not because he is black, not because it wasn’t fair. He is doing what he is doing is just for one reason, morality. He went against Vietnam war because it wasn’t right. It was not right for America to bring their troops to Vietnam killing thousands of innocent people. Dr. King wrote, “ But now I must affirm that it is just as wrong, or even more so, to use moral means to preserve immoral ends.” (301) Seeing American using equality for their reason to go to Vietnam and kill people when their intention was taking control of Vietnam resources. Knowing he would get a lot hate by pointing out the the government, Dr. King did it anyway because he believe it was a right thing to
Furthermore, he gave addition reason of why he was speaking out. He say, “As I walked among the desperate, rejected and angry young men, I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems…. But they asked-and rightly so- what about Vietnam? They asked if our own nation wasn’t using massing doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted.” King was the messenger of peace and if he had not spoken against the tragedy of Vietnam, some people might have called a hypocrite, who is the preacher of peace and does not address the greatest example of violence. He wanted people to remember him not as a hypocrite. Furthermore, King’s conscious would not forgive him if he had not spoken for the suffering people of Vietnam.
The speech “Beyond Vietnam- A time to break silence” by Martin Luther King Jr in New York City delivered in 1967. Martin Luther King Jr points out some very good points with inequality in America with civil rights in Vietnam. African- Americans are treated differently in America and don’t have that many rights, but in Vietnam they are treated equal. African- Americans don’t have equal rights but are expected to risk their live to fight in the war for something they don’t even have.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s life was filled with compassion, vigor, and purpose. Although many obstacles plagued him such as the controversy created from his support of nonviolence protests and the halt of the Vietnam War, lack of significant results displayed in his living days, and the possibility of death from one of his opposers, Luther King Jr’s desire to spread hope to many ultimately acted as a motivator to persevere and persist in the battle against poverty.
There was a downside to all of this though. Many people agreed with Martin, while others didn't. Others didn’t want a change like Martin did. Martin received frequent death threats due to his prominence in the civil rights movement. Though blacks and whites alike mourned King’s passing, the killing in some ways served to widen the rift between black and white Americans, as many blacks saw King’s assassination as a rejection of their vigorous pursuit of equality through the nonviolent resistance he had championed. This showed that people were still not happy with what Martin
Martin Luther King Jr is an African American civil rights activist during the 1960s. I decided to do my analysis on his speech "I Have a Dream" because this speech is very important in American history. The speech has a simple context. "I Have a Dream" speech was given during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. Dr. King's main purpose was to make a change in white and black citizens during the Civil Rights era. He wanted to end racism in the United States and wanted everyone to accept the change in a non-violent way. “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold those truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” (Jr).
