Neil Armstrong was born August 5, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He played a very important role in the space race which was important because it would show the world which country had the best science, technology, and economic system. On July 20, 1969 Neil made history becoming the first person to walk on the moon. Armstrong was not only an astronaut he was also an aerospace engineer, naval aviator, test pilot and university professor.
Armstrong was attracted to flying as a young boy. He assembled model aircrafts and read books about flying. His dad was an auditor for the state of Ohio, so they moved around quite frequently. Neil worked numerous jobs to earn money, so he could take flying lessons. At age 16 he earned his student pilot’s license even before he had his driver’s license. Armstrong graduated from high school in 1947 (Ollhoff).
He enlisted in the United States Navy, which gave him a college scholarship in return for later service. Armstrong then went to Purdue University in Indiana and majored in aeronautical engineering. Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The first steps by humans on another planetary body were taken by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969. " The Apollo 11 was to beat the Soviet Union in Space. Another technology was the V-2 rocket from Germany they got. The V-2 rocket was the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile.
Three men were in the spaceship to be the first men to walk and travel to the moon. The men’s names were Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong, and Edwin Aldrin. More than 5 million people were watching the space launch. At 109:24:19, Armstrong was recorded to take humankind’s first steps on the moon. Apollo 11 was important because it was the mission to let mankind to travel and walk on the planets.
On July 20, 1969 America finally became first in the protracted space race with the Soviets. On that day for America, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin of Apollo 11 became the first humans to step foot on the moon. This of course was a massive victory alongside the Soviet Union. “ The first men to land on the moon were launched from the site of KSC (Kennedy Space Center) in 1969, and every human space flight launch in the United States since that time has taken place from the Kennedy Space Center” (Rogier). “Apollo was the NASA program that resulted in American astronauts' making an aggregate of 11 spaceflights a total of 12 astronauts having walked on the moon conducting research there
There is a long standing belief in the United States that is called the “American Dream”, what that means is that if you want something bad enough and you are willing to work, then “it” can be yours someday. Working towards a better life, both Columbus and Armstrong were born into working class families. Columbus was the son of a middle class wool weaver Domenico Colombo. The exact date and location of Columbus’ birth are disputed to this day. In his younger years, Columbus helped his father operate a cheese stand which his father owned. Like Columbus, Neil Armstrong was born into a middle class family. Armstrong’s father was Stephen Armstrong, who worked for the state of Ohio as an Auditor. Armstrong was born on August 5th, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio.
Christopher Columbus (Italian: Cristoforo Colombo) is considered, by popular belief in the United States of America, to be the “Father of the Americas”. Columbus was not the first European to reach mainland in the Western Hemisphere, but his efforts did lay the path to settlement of the “New World”. Similar to Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong was a pioneer in his own right; he is the “Father of Space”. Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong were obviously two very different people based on the times in which each of the men lived; what was not different, were the characteristics and qualities that both men shared.
Lance Armstrong was born September 18, 1971 in Plano, Texas. Armstrong was always athletic and had quickly discovered that he had a love for triathlons, particularly cycling. By the age of ten he began running and swimming, and at age thirteen he started competing in cycling and triathlons (Osei-Hwere). By the age of sixteen Lance Armstrong was a professional tri-athlete and was the national sprint- course triathlon champion (Osei-Hwere). Armstrong chose to focus on cycling because it was his passion and the event that he was best at. He trained with the U.S. Olympic team in Colorado Springs. He qualified for the 1990 junior world team, where not only did he place eleventh in Road Racing, but he also finished with the best

July 16th, 1969. It’s a peaceful morning at Cape Canaveral with pleasant temperatures and little wind. All is calm. Suddenly, a tremendous roar shatters the morning as the crew of Apollo 11 blast off toward the moon, riding the biggest rocket ever created. Burning 20 tons of explosive fuel a second, it propels Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins into history. The spacecraft lands four days later on the moon. Millions watched as men took the first steps on a strange place 238,900 miles away, or 9 and ½ times around the earth. After placing America’s flag among the lunar rocks, the Apollo 11 crew lit their engines and headed for the small blue sphere we call home, splashing down safely in the ocean and completing Kennedy’s
