Christendom the first and foremost motivation of the Portuguese sent by their king was greed . They were conquistadors bent conquering natives and taking riches home not on colonizing new lands . The Portuguese were so obsessed with gold that they saw it when there was none such as the case with the Indian and rosary beads . Yet they found no gold or riches of any kind. In fact, the name of the land changed from the holy Santa Cruz to the name of a wood used for dyeing cloth Brazil . Point of fact if it had not been for the French incursions into brazil the Portuguese would probably not have set up a settlement at all in the land . At first they only sent brazil wood, enslaved Indians, and some exotic animals back to the home county . Eventually,
The greed for gold and the race for El Dorado were the main inducements of the Spaniards who, at the peril of their lives, crossed the ocean in unfit vessels in a mad pursuit after the gold and all other precious property of the Indians” (Peace 479). The royal rulers of Spain made it a rule that nothing would jeopardize their ability to rob the land from the native people of Latin America. The missionary process, “had to be encouraged, but the missionaries could not be permitted to dominate the colony at the cost of royal rule” (Gibson 76). The European governments established missionaries to cleanse their minds of any guilt aroused by the slaughtering of innocent men, women, and children. When European “ships arrived in the 16th century to colonize the land and exploit its natural resources, they killed indigenous people and brought black slaves from Africa. Millions of indigenous people were slain and their cultures completely destroyed by the process of colonization” (Ribero). The overall devastations caused by the Christianization of the native inhabitants created a blend of cultures within the indigenous civilizations which gradually isolated old native ways into a small population of oppressed people. The Christianized people became a symbol of loyalty to the European powers and were left alone simply on their religious status. This long term mission of total religious replacement caused very strong and advanced
In history, what often occurred was that influential individuals who occupied the middle ground during exploration were forgotten. These third-party individuals are called go-betweens and they helped Europeans connect with different cultural groups. The 16th century brought enormous change by the Portuguese to the indigenous groups who lived in Brazil. The colonization of Brazil owes its success to transactional, representational, and physical/biological go-betweens. The book, Go-betweens and the Colonization of Brazil, written by Alida Metcalf explores the roles of these go-betweens and their impact.
Since the discovery of Brazil in the late 1500s, the Portuguese crown felt it was a moral obligation for the colonies to be a civilized, family oriented community under Christianity. Being a Christian required three key components obedience, baptism, and evangelism and those were values Portugal wanted within these communities and so they wrote a document enforcing everyone to be on the lookout for anything or anyone not abiding to the church. Nobre was denounced when people uncovered him worshiping and kneeling to an idol which later was discovered that he practiced in a Santidade cult. Even though Nobre confessed about his tattooing, worshiping an idol, smoking tobacco, drinking fermented palm wine, and partaking in many Indian ceremonies, the inquisitor viewed these actions as a threat. In his eyes, Nobre set a poor example testifying that the mamelucos were “rude, uncivilized and back sliding Christians… they encouraged relativism and an extreme individualism. In their world, moral decisions were made based not on principles, but on the immediate need” . The inquisitor feared that it would corrupt the
The early voyages by the Portuguese and Spanish were motivated by gold, trade and the spread of the Catholic faith through religious conversion. The voyages of a few adventurers show that the Spanish and Portuguese goals were to spread Catholicism, expand trade, and expand the kingdom of the Spanish and the Portuguese to the new lands they’ve discovered. These adventures were Christopher Columbus who attempted to find a new route to Asia to extend Spain’s trade and to colonize, Bartholomew Columbus and his successful founding of Santo Domingo, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and his
In many places this religious influence can still be seen, however, in most of their colonies the imperialistic occupancy of Portugal did more harm than good, they depleted natural resources, reshaped traditional boundaries and seriously drained the population through slavery. Portugal explored, colonized and exploited the world around them for many reasons, their colonies brought wealth, created ports for Portuguese goods, and gave access to spices (like pepper and ginger), gold, timber, ivory, skins, agricultural products, slaves and other
As one of the countries we examined to place a Dunkin’ Donuts, was Portugal. Portugal was founded as a republic in 1910 after a revolution had taken place. Since then Portugal has become a part of the National American Treaty Organization, the United Nations, and the European Union. They are still a 3 branch Republic with both a President and Prime Minister, where they have a Parliamentary Particracy government system. Here in this type of government one or more political parties will lead the government rather than residents and/or elected officials. A party is voted upon by the people of Portugal and the winning party will then appoint all leadership. Portugal has been portrayed as a very stable country in recent years. In an article
Portugal’s colonization begins with the Treaty of Tordesilhas in 1494, which marked Portugal and Spain’s control over South America along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. It wasn’t until 1536 that a unique system of government was put in place in Brazil; fifteen donatary captaincies were established, which were land grants given to a private person equivalent to a royal governor. The Royal Charter for the Captaincy of Pernambuco issued to Duarte Coelho on September 24, 1534 defined how captaincies would function; these captaincies had their own mini-constitutions called forals, which defined the captain-settler relationship to the crown, and many other power; the “governors” could set up a government, had a monopoly over

After Ferdinand and Isabella had won the religious war they fought against the Moors, they finally became an independent nation. Having their own form of Christianity following the Protestant Reformation, they were eager to find lands in Asia, Africa, and America where they could spread god’s word. When Columbus came to Spain in search of a sponsor of his oversea journey, Spain saw their perfect opportunity. Columbus, being one of the only men brave enough to explore the uncharted lands overseas, could claim a variety of land for his sponsor country. With these new countries in Spain’s possession, they would finally have land to spread their religion. For these reasons, Spain saw religion as a motivator for exploration of the new
It is a literal truth that the Europeans did nothing but hurt to the economy and stability of Brazil. The Europeans did not come to teach the Brazilians. The first Portuguese explorer to meet the indigenous people was Cabral, and he came by accident. He soon realized the riches of the area and greedily mined the Amazon forest for all it’s worth. The Portuguese took slaves of Brazil back to Europe, further destabilizing the economy and bringing an evil iron hold for Portugal.
The portuguese had been experienced when it came to slave labor. They had created many sugar plantations in their territories long before Columbus had discovered the New World. After the discovery of the New World there were many plantations. Perhaps the best discovery yet was in the city of Potosi. They produced 85% of the world’s silver. The Spanish who obtained all this wealth was not very intelligent with it. They were fighting many expensive wars and
Imperialism is a process that started around 1600s. The imperialism is the act of dominating one country and changing the lives of the individuals. There are many resources that are found and developed in Brazil that led to a Portuguese colonization of Brazil. Portuguese was the first that sailed out to the region of what came to be Brazil. These region was perfect in every way. For example, the northeast region has a nice weather to grow sugar, and the location near the ports were very convenient to Portuguese. The Portuguese started out as sugar plantation, and later they found another important resources, gold. The Portuguese also used the colonies to develop another important source of life, cotton. As Pombal was raised to throne, his
The role of the Roman Catholic Church in Spain’s conquest and colonization of continental America was a two-fold process whereby under the façade of conversion and control lay the primary goal of gaining wealth, enforcing laws and the inevitable extension of control while condoning the beginnings of European slavery in the Caribbean.[i]
The topic of Mexican immigration recently made headlines again when republican presidential candidate Donald Trump released a 3 page statement detailing his blunt beliefs on Mexican immigrants. Trump’s blunt statements against Mexican immigration have led many to join the discussion of Mexican immigration. The views on the issue vary, some believe that Mexicans are the route to all of America’s unemployment trouble while others believe Mexican’s simply take jobs American’s refuse to take. Either way, there are nearly twenty four million people of Mexican decent living in the United States that have started their own communities which contribute to American society. Many American’s however, refuse to accept this and are still prosecuting Mexican’s. This can be seen in the media, public schools, and in the work place.
The beginning of the interaction of the Americas and Europe all started with the expansion of Europe. Europe had been an agricultural society that thrived and was continually expanding. However, the Black Death wiped out a third of the western European population. Technological breakthroughs proved that the European economy had a large capacity for recovery in the late middle ages. Following the middle ages came the Renaissance. The Renaissance outlooks and ideas where what helped spark the spirit that motivated the exploration of the Americas. The Portuguese where the first to start exploring. They founded many bases along the western African “Gold Coast.” These bases where all placed in key spots for the Asian spice trade. At this
