Focusing on Rip Van Winkle, the setting of the story explains the influence on the time period. It takes place before the American Revolution. This is back when King George still ruled over all of the colonies. With his wife, you could tell that this was back in the times where there was least respect for women because it says "morning, noon, and night, her tongue was incessantly going...everything he said or did was dure to produce a torrent of household eloquence." This tells you how women "do not know any better" which was the common idea back then, especially when they essentially had no rights. You can understand how they dresseed as his meeting up with the Dutch on Catskill Mountains as well. It was said that they wore "antique Dutch fashion" clothing and a "ninepin game" which initially is bowling. …show more content…

These qualities went into the story, like how Winkle wakes up and there is no longer King George, but rather George Washington. He is the first president of the United States, so you can tell the time period he has entered is the start of the new country. The Panic of 1819, as the firrst economic downfall, occured during this time which influenced this book as well through dramatization and feeling. Even though some came from The Panic of 1819, the main dramatic impact came from the Era of Good Feeling. In this era, it reflected a sense of national purpose and a desire for unity. I think that a good moral to this story, is of how far America has come and the dramatic changes it has
