How Did Robert E Lee Influence His Army

In the spring of 1861 as the nation leaned toward Civil War, both Grant and Lee would be forced to make very difficult decisions. Grant would only have to decide between being a patriot or a traitor. In a letter to Grant’s father he wrote: “There are but two parties now, Traitors & Patriots and I want hereafter to be ranked with the latter. . . (Grant p 957)"18 Lee was torn between a successful career in the United States Army, his devotion to the Union, an appointment as commander of the Union forces and the love he had for his family and homeland. The first person I will be talking about is Robert E. Lee. General Lee served as a military officer in the U.S Army and was the general of the Confederate Army. General Lee and his army had great success during the Peninsula Campaign,Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg. His greatest victory was the bloody Battle of Chancellorsville. General Lee was defeated in the Battle of Gettysburg. General Lee pushed his Army with certainty that he would win the Battle of Gettysburg, but in the end he was defeated. With over 3,000 killed and more wounded and missing. "We failed, but in the good providence of God apparent failure often proves a blessing."

Robert E. Lee was a man of family, culture and tradition. Lee was a man who believed in the old English ways in chivalry. The Southern states fought for the same ideals that Lee stood for. Lee believed that this way of life made men to be of a higher class. He was convinced that these old values can build a better nation. Catton express the Confederacy loyalty to these values by saying: “For four years, the southern states had fought a separate war to up held the ideals for which Lee; as if he himself was the Confederacy… the best thing that the way of life for which the Confederacy stood could have ever had to offer” (410).

Lee, after being named commander-in-chief of the army surrendered on April 9th at Appomattox Court House. The south had lost, but Lee saved many lives by not continuing, at that point in time, a non-winnable war against

Lee had given the Confederacy its greatest victory, and was now an idol of the southern people. Lee was one of the most supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. One of the four “greatest Americans” was none other than Robert E. Lee. His picture hung in President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s office. A New York dentist told Eisenhower that Lee helped the United States Government. Lee was a heroic role model to the nation that he has shown when he went to the war. Lee is a bit complicated, but he was extraordinary in what he does. Lee was there to serve the south and protect them. He made sure that they were safe and that the Union would not get in the way of that. His maneuvers were even better.

Robert Edward Lee was born in Stratford, Virginia on January 19, 1807 to an aristocratic family. His parents both played a major role in Lee’s success. His mother Ann Hill Carter descended from a wealthy family while his father Colonel Henry Lee, served as a cavalry leader during the Revolutionary War. At a young age his father passed away, and his leadership roles were challenged. He was one of the six men in his family and had to help support the household. At eighteen he attended West Point MIlitary Academy, where he excelled in artillery, infantry and cavalry. Shortly after his mother’s passing in 1829, Lee was appointed to second lieutenant in the U.S. Military Corps of Engineers. He began courting Mary Curtis who is a member of the Virginia’s aristocracy. After getting Mr. Curtis’s approval they get married and have seven children together.

The Commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was General Robert E. Lee. General Lee graduated second in his class from West Point in 1829 and served throughout the country, but is best known for his leadership during the Mexican-American War. General Lee believed in unity but when the state of Virginia decided to secede from the Union in April 1861, Lee decided to stay with Virginia. Confederate president Jefferson Davis asked Lee to serve as his senior military adviser and General Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia on June 1, 1862.

The foundation of Robert E. Lee’s leadership was built on self-discipline. Robert E. Lee believed that “If one intends to lead by example and inspire respect, one has to fulfill the ideal of someone whose vision and performance are coherent, organized, and effective” (Crocker, 1999, p. 17). For example, Julius Caesar is synonymous with the late Roman Republic and George Washington is synonymous with the American Revolution. Just like these two men, the name Robert E. Lee has become synonymous with the American Civil War. Not only did Lee rise to become the most important and recognizable person in the Southern Confederacy, but his honor and virtuous acts during and after the war made him a hero to modern-day Americans. Even though he fought for what many consider the morally erroneous side of the war, the virtues of his character have made him a figure in American history

Lee would be the general of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Lee first will take over and will be in charge from 1861-1865. What Lee’s first task will be to take his army at Second Bull Run and lead them to a Confederate victory.

Robert E. Lee was from Virginia and the confederate’s main general. Jefferson Davis, (President of the Confederate states) asked if he would be the leader of the Confederate army during the Civil war. Lee had a decision to make. He did not like slavery or the thought of the country splitting up; but he also did not want to go against his home state: Virginia. General Lee made up his mind to become the main general of the Confederate states. He could not go against Virginia.

He only fought for his duty to Virginia(Woodworth 1). Lee was born January 19, 1807 in Stratford Hall, VA, and died in 1870 from a heart attack(Crawley 1). The north was scared of Lee, Even though he was outnumbered he won many battles.
