Almost everyone knows what a monster Adolf Hitler was, but most people do not know that one of the great ally leader of World War II, Joseph Stalin, had committed even greater atrocities than Hitler. Joseph Stalin was a ruthless and yet diligent dictator of the Soviet Union, whose rise to power influenced a multitude of major events in his country’s history. Due to Stalin’s impactful reign, he made the Soviet Union become a global superpower, underwent difficult hardships such as the Great Famine in the Soviet Union, and after his death, caused the Soviet Union to go through a process known as de-Stalinization.

Joseph Stalin is known to be “one of the most powerful and murderous dictators in history” (bbc.co.uk). Stalin became general secretary of the Communist Party, which had given him the control that he had been looking for (bbc.co.uk). Soon after, he was granted dictatorship of the Soviet Union after Vladimir Lenin had died (historyplace.com). Many people did not like the way that Stalin was ruling. People wanted their own independence from Stalin and he did not take that very well. In 1929, Stalin had believed that many Ukrainian scholars, scientists, religious leaders, etc. were planning a riot against him. Without even being listened to during a trial, they were killed or deported immediately to prison camps (blogspot.com).

J.Arch Getty says that “The Great Terror of the 1930s in the Soviet Union was one of the most horrible cases of political violence in modern history”[i] but was this political terror a result of Stalin’s own paranoia or a necessity to maintain control in Soviet Russia? They began making improvements which encouraged their people to believe that prosperous times await them. This notion would unfortunately turn out as an illusion. Joseph Stalin was both a blessing and a curse for Russia. He ruled with an iron fist, had harsh tactics, and treated people as obstacles in his way on the path to power. Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin are 2 notoriously known people in world history. Both Stalin and Hitler are known for the great number of deaths they have caused. Although both men have totally different reasons on why they killed so many people their ways of leadership are somewhat alike.

think WWII couldn't of been prevented because of too many different problems. Even if you killed all those evil men WWII would have still happen. Joseph Stalin wanted to raise agricultural production and to modernize industry, Mussolini convinced the men to be in the black t-shirt. The men who didn’t agree with Mussolini were killed, Hitler created the Nazis, because wanted to purify Germany by removing other races, mostly Jews, and Tojo moved westward to get more living space and get more raw material. If the United States had joined the League of Nations, it would have been undoubtable a lot stronger.

As the war was winding down, the Big Three met again at the Black Sea resort of Yalta from February 11th, 1945. Each arrived at the conference with their own agenda, with Roosevelt seeking Soviet aid against Japan, Churchill demanding free elections in Eastern Europe, and Stalin desiring to create a Soviet sphere of influence. Also to be discussed were plans for the occupation of Germany.
