Up until the 1700s, all Europeans had known was an absolute monarchy as a government. Monarchs often answered to no other government officials, and consequently, abused their power to oppress lower classes. Men began meeting in secret salons to discuss what needed to be changed in order to fix this, subsequently beginning enlightenment ideas. John Locke, a prominent English enlightenment thinker, believed that citizens had the right to rebel against an unfair government. As a result, America’s Revolution against Britain was sparked. The American colonies had been under the rule of their mother country, Britain, for many years. During this time, they were burdened with excessive taxation, unlawful soldiers, and little to no representation in parliament. The colonist had had enough, so they decided to revolt against the king through a document entitled The Declaration of Independence. In these pages, they stated that all men were created equal and were given inalienable rights at birth. Then the colonists began to address all the wrongdoings of King George III, which they described as establishing “an absolute Tyranny over these States”. The writings begin to differ when The Declaration of Independence lists the malpractices of King George as reasons for their parting while The Declaration of the Rights of Man solely focuses on what must be changed. The American Revolution, one of the most historical events in its time period and now. We as Americans represent this event in celebrating Independence Day. On July 4th of every year Americans celebrate the departure and independence we obtained from Great Britain. It was the British who controlled and basically owned the Thirteen Colonies of North America in which we now know as the United States. Making the lives of American citizens miserable and unable to bare the bondage from the rules, regulations, and tariffs brought on by the British could no longer be tolerated. If all men were to be created equal the Americans wanted just that and that meant having their own control. In order to break away from the bondage Great Britain had on the colonist was to start a war and defeat Great Britain.
Americans believed they deserved the same rights as Englishmen and wanted to assembly their own parliaments. The colonies resisted the rule of the Crown and the Parliament especially those having to do with taxes. The colonies expressed their own rights under the leadership of Massachusetts. After the 7 years war, there was a huge money deficit and the British needed a way to regain their financial loss. This led to excessive taxation, which angered the colonists. Historian Carl N. Degler stated that this led to the colonies developing self reliance and their own ideas of government, as well as a heightened economy. John Locke, an English philosopher during the Enlightenment period in the 17th century, was ahead of his time. He developed the idea that a legitimate government had to promote human equality under God and to protect its people and their property, not just have them in submission to a monarch or tyrant. John Locke defined tyranny as “the exercise of power beyond right, which nobody can have the right to” (Locke Two Treaties of Government p. 68). So, In Locke’s view a tyrant wasn’t just a king but any form of government that acts outside the boundary of the law for their own will and to please themselves.
