The civil war was a major part in the history for the United States and played a very critical role in African American History. It determined these things. If the Union and the South were going to stay two separate territories or if the Union was going to stay one big country or territory. This Civil war also determined one huge thing that could affect America's history for centuries to come. Slavery, almost so big that it could have been perceived as a business. Slavery had most of the black population in the south, on the plantations, picking cotton. Even with all of unjust labor and terror, there was still hope, there was still a chance of freedom.The civil war had gave that hope. If the Union was to win the civil war the slaves would be free people. While he was with his owner he was living living in a free territory which meant he was not really a slave. But his owner had moved back into a southern slave state once again. When living in that slave state his owner had died which had forced him back into slavery. This unjustly act by southerners had led him to contacting abolitionists and helping him file a lawsuit. This lawsuit was so big that it made its way to Washington D.C and the supreme court had to make a decision for Dred Scott. This decision did not go to Dred Scott's favor. The Supreme Court had decided that Dred Scott was not a person, but rather property so that meant wherever Dred went he was still going to be considered a slave. This caused a repeal in the Missouri Compromise and angered most northerners because this meant slavery could be spread to
