How Did The Civil War Affect African American History

The civil war was a war that took place from 1861 to 1865. It was fought between the Union, otherwise known as the North, and the Confederates, also known as the South. The war was started because the Confederacy wanted to leave the US and become its own country. But the North would not allow it. The war is significant because it freed the slaves. Also, it was significant because it kept the country together. Lastly, the Civil War is significant because it put an end to a hate driven culture and taught people to accept others despite their differences.

In the book, Dred Scott v. Sandford, they discuss the Dred Scott case and the problems that arose from the case. Basically, the Supreme Court overreached its bounds in regards to the case it oversaw. The court was asked to decide on the fate of Dred Scott and his family in regards to their freedom. Instead, they overreached and decided on constitutionality of the Missouri Compromise and the overall citizenship of all those of African descent. This brought the matter of slavery to the forefront of everyone’s mind in America. It thoroughly destroyed the status quo of the North and South.

The Dred Scott Decision was a famous Supreme Court case deciding over the rule of slavery in newly discovered territory. The decision occurred in 1857 and affirmed that slaveholders should have the right to take their slaves to the west . The Decision took three attempts to finally reach a decision of whether an African American living in recently developed land should be free or not. Below I will discuss the life of Dred Scott, the Scott v. Emerson Case, and the Scott v. Sandford Case, and what happened to slavery in the proceeding decades.

According to Roger B Taney, all African Americans were property and had no right to what their owners did. And because he was a slave had no right to sue the courts. The reasoning for this is, if an African American was a slave they were then considered property. Once their former owner deceased or sold them they become someone else's property. Even if the slave was moved to “free soil” , when moved back to a slave state the were considered a slave again. Because of this unfair decision, the court ruled the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional because it forbid slave owners the right to take their slaves anywhere. Which leds back to the Fifth amendment, depriving them of “life, liberty and property”. By Taney stating the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional he destroyed one the compromises that helped keep the union together. The decision made by Dred Scott v. Sandford case created lots of protests against the courts Thus making this case a road to the Civil War, and also a major landmark. The decision was overturned when the adoption on the 13th and 14th Amendment of 1865 was introduced, which ended slavery and created all slaves, and man equal

Depending on the outlook one takes, the Civil War changed America for better or worse. The Civil war was known as the bloodiest war that took place in the United States, and it killed many people. It was a war in which the Union states (Northern America) faced secessionists from the Confederate states (Southern America). The Civil war was due to a division between the Confederate and the Union states because the South wanted to keep their slaves but the North wanted to abolish slavery. It lasted from 1861 to 1865, changing America forever.

The Dred Scott Case had a huge impact on the United States as it is today. The Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments have called it the worst Supreme Court decision ever rendered and was later overturned. The Dred Scott Decision was a key case regarding the issue of slavery; the case started as a slave seeking his rightful freedom and mushroomed into a whole lot more. 65

On the other hand, the lawyers of Mrs. Emerson (Dr. Emerson’s wife) weren’t ready to give up or accept this decision. Therefore, the lawyers appealed to the Missouri Supreme Court. Unfortunately, the Missouri court overturned or upturned the lower court's ruling in the year 1852. As a result, Dred Scott and his wife were sent back to slavery. Well, the judges argued or said that Missouri should not recognize or determine the laws/ruling of the other states. As a matter of fact, Missouri was in opposition to it own law. The judges argued that just because Illinois and Wisconsin were free states, Missouri didn’t have to set free their slaves. Besides that, the judges mentioned that the Scotts( Dred Scott and his wife) have voluntarily decided to return back to their slave state. In other words, they gave u their freedom and chose to return back to the slave territory. Nextly, Dred Scott and his wife overturned their case to the federal court system. Yet, this time, they brought or decided to file a lawsuit against Mrs. Emerson’s brother or John Sanford. In other words, John Sanford claimed to own them ( Dred Scott and his wife). Many believe the war no effect on the industralization of the country. However due to the civil war the economy was drastically changed, there were many social changes in The economical effects were that the souths economy was completely destroyed. Since the south no longer had free labor mending their plantations, the production of king cotton went downhill.

Those Americans from the North were considered more progressive and had more influence from other cultures which helped open their eyes to the horrors of slavery. But for many of the men, going to war was a chance to escape boredom and some came because it was the right thing to do (p. 28).

The Civil War is being credited with having influenced early jazz music. After the Civil War, African Americans were free from slavery and now able to explore different aspects of life that were otherwise unavailable to them in the past. Although African Americans were involved in music such as Negro Spirituals, the post-Civil War era opened up new doors for what was once known as African American music. During this time all of the instruments from the Civil War Armies marching bands became available to African Americans due to the cheap prices and this allowed them to explore music more in depth which birth many different forms of jazz music. Not all instruments were available to African Americans so jazz music was birth from just a few basic

The American Civil War may be one of the most significant wars to ever happen in the world. The war shaped the future of our country and developed one of the greatest sectional divisions within one country. The war altered all American life and society. Men, Women, and children were involved in the war to some extent. Although the war was devastating to the country at the time, it allowed for a sought out brighter future.

The Civil War was an important and defining event in history which helped shape and unite Americans, however, it mostly aided African Americans and women. It influenced many events that took place later in history such as bringing the nation together, paving the way for an industrialized nation, but most importantly, in my opinion, it started the journey of equality for blacks as well as women. The Civil War was a war between the Northern and Southern states; and I believe one of the biggest reasons leading to it was the opposing views against slavery. Although, the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves, blacks were still not considered equals and continued to be ill-treated and discriminated against.

Even though I did not exist during the civil war, I believe it has affected my life as I know today. The civil war was a fight between the Union states and the Confederacy states. The northern and southern states fought because of their idea differences. Abraham Lincoln was able to maintain the Union and approved the idea of abolishing slavery. When the Union states won they were finally able the abolish slavery in America and making the United States into a single nation.

It was between the Union and the Confederacy over their differences and problems they created. The consequences the nation faced due to the demolition of the Civil War, was terrifying. Then the Reconstruction era was born to restore, reinstate, and unite the United States as one. During the Reconstruction of 1865 through 1867, African American lives were impacted economically because they were given few rights and their resources were limited, socially because they wanted to be given an ordinary lifestyle, and politically because they weren’t allowed to be joined or linked with the government.
