Medici Banking System
The Medici family had little economic stature in their beginning when they first moved to Florence in the early 15th century which gave them cause to change their current position and earn a name and fortune for themselves. Their actions resulted in their family becoming one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the 15th century. The Medici family’s problem was not having sufficient funds when they first came to Florence. This created a large concern for them because they did not have adequate funds. Which created a concern for what could become of them. At first the “Medici family made their money in the wool trade” (How did the de Medici contribute to the Renaissance? 2017). The Medici family also used the back of their shop to do “illegal transactions” (Detrick “Early Renaissance”). However this still did not solve their economic dilemma, however eventually they saved enough money through the wool trade that they were able to “soon prosper in their new home” (How did the de Medici contribute to the Renaissance? 2017). This gave them profits to expand their family’s interest in wealth and economics.

1360-1429) choose to solve the family’s economic stature. Giovanni “established the Medici bank” (How did the de Medici contribute to the Renaissance? 2017) he used the family’s profits from the wool trade to do so. “The Medici bank was one of the most prosperous and most respected in Europe” (Medici family - New World Encyclopedia 2014). The Medici family gained even more financial security when they acquired another medieval power, the Catholic church. “The Medici bank collected 10% of your earnings for the church” (Gods of Bakers). The fact that the Pope had used the Medici bank also gave cause for the people the want to have an “account with the Pope's personal bank” (Gods of Bankers N/A). This invention of their bank solved their economic position and gave them immense
Next, the rise of commerce in Renaissance Florence was marked by key alliances and the development of the wool industry in the 13th century. The international banking web used by Dati and Pitti was developed earlier when; “[Florence] took over the papal banking monopoly… and established themselves
Cosimo de’ Medici was born on September 27, 1389 in Florence, Italy at the time his family was middle class bankers. At a young age his father Giovanni, introduced his son to the family business of banking. As Cosimo grew older, he took on more duties in the family business and eventually became the head of the bank the family owned. When he was a young man he had an important relationship with the Catholic Church, at this time the Church was the dominant religious faith of Europe, the one most powerful men in Europe was the Pope. Cosimo recognized the important role of the Catholic Church and made a friendship with the Pope. After this relationship the Medici banks were handling most of the Church’s financial accounts. Some
Lorenzo De’Medici, fabulously wealthy, brilliant statesman and equally brilliant patron of the arts. He was quite possibly the greatest single contributor to the Renaissance and it’s fabulous wealth of art. His and his family’s patronage of the arts, amounting to hundreds of thousands of florins allowed artists such as Botticelli, Michelangelo and Leonardo to flourish and thrive, creating some of their greatest works with Medici money. Lorenzo was heir to one of the great fortunes of late medieval Europe, through his family’s ownership of the Medici bank. His grandfather, Cosimo enhanced the bank’s power to its apex and its wealth was declining when Lorenzo came to power, but it was still an immensely wealthy organization. Lorenzo assumed unofficial
Artists began to compete and find new ways to make art better and more life-like. Cosimo had commissioned many great arts, including the building of many great cathedrals. He even supported great artists who are still well-known today like Ghiberti, Brunelleschi, and Donatello. It was because of this that Florence became the cultural center in Europe and many artists travelled to Florence knowing they could be commissioned and have others see their work. Even during the time of Lorenzo the Magnificent, Lorenzo had worked frequently with famous artist, Michelangelo. Also, the Medici family were even patrons to Leonardo da Vinci for seven years. It was then said that Cosimo later died in 1464. The Medici family then continued its long line of power and found themselves not in power only during two short periods, where they were exiled because of revolts. The Medici family though it was well-known for its patronage was first and foremost famous for its banking. The Medici bank, as it was called, had a good name in Europe and was well respected. From this they prospered greatly. They also started using the newer system of double-entry bookkeeping, enabling them to keep track of credit and debit. The Medici family also
The Medici family was one of the wealthiest families in Florence, their wealth allowed them to fund many political campaigns and build alliances. When the Medici family power began, Italy was not a unified nation, it was rather organized into city-states like Siena, Venice, Naples and Florence, the one where the Medicis took hold. The emergence of the Medici family began with Giovanni di Bicci de’ Medici, who funded the Medici Bank in the early 15th century. Through owning a bank and becoming very friendly with everyone and building alliances, the family came of much wealth and influence. The Medicis were also very big in the arts, they supported artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli.
The Renaissance took place during the mid 14th century as nobles as aristocrats began to hire ambitious artists to promote thinking such as philosophy, wisdom and beauty using art. One famous figure that sparked the Renaissance is Lorenzo Medici, a powerful banker dubbed as the patron of Arts and Philosophy. Medici and his family began to employ artists to fulfill their mindset and vision of forwarding the depth and culture of the arts that has been lost during the Dark Ages. Lorenzo commissioned artists to depict key philosophical truths such as Kindness and Compassion, glorifying the best qualities of the State and Leadership during that time. Changes in thinking and ideals can be found in the way different artists from the two separate eras portrayed their art in different manners using various
Law in the middle Ages was ambiguous, oaths, ordeals and ‘Judgments of God’ were considered to be equivalent to law. There was no formal hierarchy of courts or assemblies, disputes were often settled by collective judgement lead by a group of men from the highest status in the community. The legal disputes in both sources reflect the unprofessional law in medieval Europe.
THE MEDICI FAMILY’S INFLUENCE The Medici family were the most powerful citizens of Florence, leaders of the largest bank in Europe, and through strategic marriage alliances, joined many of Europe's royal families. They controlled Florence throughout much of the Renaissance, played a large part in the patronage of the arts and the political development of the city. They faced many challenges, had both positive and negative effects and they tried to have solutions to most of their problems which some did not work. This is an example of the Common Themes Theory.
Giovanni di Bicci de’ Medici founded the Medici bank in 1397 after splitting from his nephew to establish a bank branch in Florence. As the new bank grew and expanded, so did the wealth and power of the Medici family. When Cosimo il Vecchio de’ Medici, Giovanni’s son, took over the banking business in 1434, the increasing economic power of the Medici family allowed them to establish themselves as effective rulers of Florence while keeping the republican system of government nominally intact. The bank provided the Medici family a combination of economic and political power that facilitated the stability of Medici rule. Thus, the failure of the Medici bank during the reign of Lorenzo il Magnifico was key to the collapse of the Medici

The members of the Medici bank also did their work sitting on benches and behind tables. The first location was in Via dell Arte della Lana, also known as, Wool Guild Street. Since they were confronted with different currencies they took out a commission for the conversion of the currency instead of charging interest. Since no interest was applied, there was no sin. Little by little they started expanding into areas such as Florence, Venice, and Rome. The Medici bank was doing everything right. They soon grew to be a powerful financial unit in

Capital punishment has been around for centuries taking the life of guilty convicts to bring justice to the people. However, many people see the death penalty as a brutal action which no human should have to face, guilty or innocent. After the death penalty travelled around the world, it became very popular in America leading to many Supreme Court cases and protests. Endlessly, people have argued their viewpoints about whether the death penalty is constitutional in relation to the 8th amendment which states no “cruel or unusual” punishment. Politicians from every state including Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, have commented their personal views on the death penalty making it a very public dispute.
