The Greeks didn’t begin coming to America until the 1800’s. Most of the Greeks that came to America were impoverished and looking for a better life, the American dream. In the film the people being interviewed described how most of their relatives who migrated to America came with a penny in their pocket or a loaf of bread under their arm. After their arrived in America by boats through New York, they were able to open restaurants and start their businesses within weeks of arriving. Since making food only requires hard labor, they were able to sell their cheese, olives and pastries to earn money and eventually own a restaurant. The Greeks were willing to work hard and to sacrifice for their families to receive a better life. Some of them came
New Orleans, Louisiana was greatly influenced by Greek ancestry and culture. It has taken many different aspects of Greek culture that have impacted the different traditions we have today, such as architecture, city elements, and Mardi Gras. Greek influenced New Orleans street names as well as Mardi Gras. New Orleans architecture was affected by Greeks and we also have many sites in New Orleans that we're affected by greek culture.
When visiting different countries, it is easy to see the differences between the cultures of each place. When visiting Greece, something that stood out to me was the food and the process that it took to get it. Greeks ate at different times than Americans and finding a place to eat was a completely different process than in America. The service, food, and payment at Greek restaurants also had contrasting styles than what I was used to in the United States. Greeks and Americans both contain people who share a love for food, but the process of getting food in each country is slightly different from each other depending on the time, place, and service.
One of the reasons why the greek immigrated to Canada from Greece was because they were jobless. When they came to Canada, there were many construction working jobs that were open for work. So, they were great at building and constructing buildings in downtown and all around Canada. This lead us to thinking about our artifact, which is the brick. Bricks are usually used for building and the greek were good at building structures, so the brick turned out to be our artifact. The reason why the greeks used bricks in building was because it was one of the strongest materials that they had to work with and that is the reason why many properties are made from brick.
The Greek economy was based off of agriculture. They were also colonized to somewhat like the states we have in America. Their main crops and trade products were grapes, olives, and wine. The Greek commerce and trade by sea is what made all of the Greek city-states as wealthy and important as they were. The Greeks were often called “The Masters of the Mediterranean” because of their skillful seafaring.
The author’s tone is excited yet maintains a calmness, like someone in modern times might talk about something expensive that they bought. At points the author speaks with reverence of the palaces. The use of words like “feasted” and “echoing” helps in demonstrating the enormity of what they do for things that may seem like every day encounters, such as having a visitor over. This idea helps to demonstrate that the Greeks valued luxury and leisure so they could reap the rewards from the work that they had done.
The main reason for Greeks to immigrate to the United States was, according to “The Journey – The Greek American Dream”, the Greece depression in the late 1700 and early 1800. In that era, most Greek where living as peasants having barely any agriculture in Greece. These hard life made thousands of Greek move and emigrate to the United States. The first generation living in the United States had hard times working for the Whites, with the very low income jobs from selling fruits on the street to mine and railroads work. The film describes, how strikes were common and how a Greek woman tried to change the bad conditions for mine and railroad workers in seeing every Greek working place across the United States. Greek immigrants had very bad
In the late 18th century, European migrants such as Germans, Polish, and Italians came to America to start a better life, little did they know that coming to a new country such as America wouldn't be the easiest. Many Germans, Polish, and Italian immigrants began searching for a new life in America in the late 1800’s. As easy as they thought is was going to be, many immigrants had a tenacious time being part of America. They needed to leave the country that they knew and their loved ones, hoping their lives would improve after arriving in the United States. German immigrants moved to America because of poverty, conversely being so indigent that they couldn't provide for themselves. They also came to America to provide for their families whom they brought along. Polish immigrants came to earn more money then the earned in Poland. Italian immigrants came to America to escape the wars that were happening as well as pursuing a better economic opportunity. Immigration to America was a time where European immigrants wanted to start a new life with their families.
In the late 1800s, millions upon millions of Europeans made their way to America for a variety of reasons. For the citizens of Italy, those reasons included poverty and political hardship. For many Italians, farming was their livelihood, however the antiquity of their tools did not allow for maximum efficiency. As a result, approximately 5 million poor Italian farmers made the trip across the Atlantic to America. While most settled in New York and the surrounding states, some journeyed elsewhere to states like Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. Once they arrived, they would take the vacant positions of workers on strike making up to ten times the salary they would have made in their homeland.
American sport culture has had many influences that impact how they are today. I believe the ancient greek culture, and society accurately reflects on our sports. There are many variables to american sports that were taken from the greek society. Americans have open gyms and mass training sessions like the greeks had. American sports also have big festivals with sports competitions like the greeks has. Americans also use sports to train, and some to train for war just like the greeks did as well. There are many more ways american sports reflect the greeks, but those are just a few examples.
American novelist Tom Robbins once said “Our similarities bring us to a common ground; our differences allow us to be fascinated by each other.” Everyone has a different story, whether it’s something big like immigration or something small like family tradition. These differences don’t pull us apart, but show us how unique we are and that being the same isn’t always the best. While the typical Greek immigrant left due to economic failure, prospered in America, and brought their rich culture with them, the same cannot be said for my family. While there were some similarities between the immigration of the typical Greek and my family, there are also many differences.
Mass immigration from Greece began in the 1890s and went through to the 1920s. Four hundred thousand Greek people immigrated to the United States. At the time of this mass immigration Greece was an agricultural country, a lot of people were peasants, and had very small plots of land throughout southern Greece and the islands. In the 19th century most people were barely making a living. Blight also became a problem as their grapes were destroyed and current production of food went down. The solution to this was to immigrate to the United States. Once in America Greeks relayed heavily on fellow Greeks immigrants to find jobs and survive because they didn't know the language or how things worked in America. New York was the first stop for many
What defines Greekness? What really is Greekness? These are important questions to ask because the answers to them will end up forming what we know today as the ancient Greeks. Professor Lynette Mitchell at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom partially examined these questions herself in her short paper Greekness (2012) which appears in The Encyclopedia of Ancient History (2012). Professor Mitchell cites Herodotus 8.144.2 which is an examination of the topic of “Greekness” from Herodotus. In 8.144.2 Herodotus talks about why the Greeks would not sell out themselves to the Persians in 492 BCE because of their “Greekness”. Perhaps most interestingly, Herodotus not only references shared blood as an important aspect of what it means to be Greek but also “speech”, and gods / religious practices that that they have in common. Ms. Mitchell then builds off Herodotus’ explanation by referencing the importance of the Homeric Epic Poems, and examining the history of “cultural community”. Emma Dench of Harvard University also wrote a paper on the topic of Greekness and it was also appropriately titled Greekness (2002). Dr. Dench’s paper was part of a larger work by Jonathan M. Hall of the University of Chicago titled Hellenicity: Between Ethnicity and Culture (Chicago, 2002). Professor Dench is able to determine, through the examination of Herodotus’ Histories, that blood is a far less important trait in respect to Greekness then language, gods, or customs is. Through the
Compared to other American groups, Greek-Americans are sought out to be wealthy, educated, and successful. They feel that their success comes from being hard workers. There were two major periods of migration for the Greeks to the United States. The First period was from 1890-1924, and the second period was from 1925- 1968 (Markus, 1986). Greeks, on average, have higher education, and higher income than other ethnic groups.
The Greeks and the Romans were among the most influential societies in the history of the world. Evidence of Greek or Roman influence can be found in almost every culture or country that has ever existed. Though both cultures were different in practice and incredibly competitive with one another, their politics and their beliefs set the stage for future civilizations, including those of the modern world. In particular, the values and practices of Greek and Roman citizenship and politics, more than any other cultures, influences American policies today in terms of values, government, and self-image.
Have you ever really looked into the development of history? Have you ever wondered who contributed to western civilization? The ancient Greeks were perhaps one of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world and are among one of the biggest landmarks in all of world history. The Greeks affected philosophy, math, science, arts, architecture, drama and etc. Many of Greek principles and concepts have since been applied in civilizations throughout much of western history and have had a continuing impact on people in different phases of history. Numerous of philosophers, authors, and artists originated in Greece are believed to have influenced much of the world. There were other empires that were bigger than those of Greece, such as Rome and the British Empire, but none of these cultures produced more great thinkers, philosophers, and artists than Greece.
