Elizabeth Bishop’s writings were influenced by the Post War era in which she lived. Post War America was a period directly after the end of World War II. A time when America was going through great economic expansions. This era focused on inventive and industrial expansion which greatly helped improve Middle America. Politically, socially and economically the Post War era changed the lives of many Americans. Politically, after the War the United Nations formed to serve as a security council. The fear of a Nuclear War was also a political problem. Many Americans lived in fear of a nuclear war and constructed end of day’s bunkers. Prior to World War 2, America was in a Great Depression that cause politicians to focus on domestic issues. At the start of another world war the United States declare neutrality, but it shows sympathy to democracies. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor America stop being isolationist to combat external threats. The United States didn’t address the domestic issues that plague the country for years. However, Proxity wars, Truman’s policies, and rising tensions shaped the world and US. Though not all problems were solved by words alone, America was steadfast in helping their European partners in conflicts such as The Great War and World War 2. Although only entering the Great War in its last year, the intervention was still noted among the international community. The start of World War 2 launched the US out of The Great Depression and allowed many Americans to get back to work and serve their country. The conclusion of WW2 saw the US at the head of the table making demands and laying out policies, president Franklin D. Roosevelt led the charge in the war and it was Harry S. Truman who ended the war with his crucial decisions. After the US had done all of this it sought out all Communism in the world by not fighting large countries, but fighting proxy wars in Vietnam and Korea with president Ronald Reagan at the helm of it all.

“One Art” is a villanelle filled with sad sentiments of encouragement towards accepting loss. Elizabeth Bishop uses her tone to pull emotions from the reader that could be confusion and disagreement. Her tone deeply impacts the reader in such a way that it causes him/her to seriously think of accepting her opinion and advice. The capturing way she uses her tone in her word choice shows the reader her natural inflexion when she speaks. The tone of her work even affects her characterization. In “One Art,” Elizabeth Bishop uses tone to convey a character of false casualty, while also using it to emphasize the very heavy impact of her diction.
