Who were the Puritans and were their religious and social values. How did their views differ from the Anglican Church? The Puritans were a diverse group of religious people that sought to purify the Church of England in the 16th, 17th, and 18th Century. Most of the Puritans believed that the church was corrupted and that true Christians should be separated from it. The rise of Puritans started as people began learning how to read and write and as Bibles started becoming more available to commoners, several people started reading the Bible for themselves. The Declaration of Independence was written for several reasons. The authors of the Declaration of Independence wanted the pursued the colonist that loyalty to Britain was pointless and a lost cause. One purpose was to state the reasons for separation from Britain and why it was morally justified. Another reason was to explain the purpose of a government. Thomas Jefferson believed that the people had the right to alter the government and institute a New Government. The writers of the Declaration believed that the people were justified to break away from the unjust government that, instead of protecting their God-given rights, was working to destroy them. Another purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to point out the grievances against the king for the entire world to see. The last reason for the Declaration of Independence was to get support from other countries, specifically France and Spain. In order to defeat Great Britain the members of the Continental Congress knew that they would need support from other countries.
