How Did Voltaire Influence The American Revolution

The French and American Revolutions both had many enlightenment influences. These influences consisted of John locke, in both the American and French, Voltaire in both revolutions, and Montesquieu in both. Rousseau influenced the American and Marie Wollstonecraft influenced the French. People may sometimes wonder how the influences were similar and different, and that is what this essay will be about.
Both the American Revolution and the French Revolution were influenced by many of the same enlightenment thinkers in the same ways as each other. John Locke influenced the right of revolution, the three natural rights, no king should have absolute power and also believed in the social contract. Before either revolution, religion was forced upon the people of France and the colonists of the soon to be United States of America. This was because the church also helped rule the English and the French civilizations. This separation made things more fair for people who did not believe and allowed for freedom of religion and not being forced to be Catholic. Most importantly, Voltaire promoted freedom of speech. This allowed anyone to say what they want, and helped the revolution to spread faster. Montesquieu also Influenced separation, but instead of church and state, he wanted separation of powers in a way that all branches of government have equal power. Montesquieu promoted that women should be in the government because they could help men make rational and calm decisions when in a chaotic scene. He did not believe that all men were created equal however, and approved of slavery and thought that women should obey every command of their
