The politics of 19th century Europe was very messy. It was made up of various empires spreading across the water trying to show each other who was the biggest power. Each built up massive armies to stave off war thinking that everyone else will be too scared to fight against them or so they thought. Things all changed when a gang of Yugoslav nationalists who didn’t like being part of Austria-Hungary shot the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand when he was in Sarajevo. After World War 1 soldiers found it hard to live after all they experienced in the trenches if they made it home they were scared and not the same and then there were those who didn’t make it home at all. The First World War destroyed empires, created numerous new nation-states, encourages independence movements in Europe’s colonies, forced the United States to become a world power and led directly to Soviet communism and the rise of Hitler. Technology became an essential element in the art of war with submarines, airplanes, tanks all playing important new roles. Mass production techniques that were developed during the war for the building of armaments revolutionized industries in the post-war years. There was a widespread restructuring of primary industry with a large orientation towards militarism. There was massive political change where new systems of power were introduced that gave governments a range of new powers including the control over industry. The civilian population had severe restrictions placed upon their rights and liberties due to the necessities that total war required.
World War 1 has been a famous war throughout history. Many films have been made surrounding it, sometimes realistic and sometimes not so much. Paths of Glory and All Quiet on the Western Front were two such movies that depicted the Great War. Each movie is unique in their own sense and although no movie will completely convey the harsh reality of the war some movies are better than others. Depending on when and what year the war would have looked vastly different to different soldiers. Some would only know the reality of the trench while others would recognize “tanks” rolling over the ground which were impenetrable to normal gun fire. Which side of the war one was on would have also lead to different views, as in when one side is winning the other is losing, and when morale is up on one side normally morale is down on the other.

World War 1 changed the world around it. More men fought than one could comprehend. World War 1 almost destroyed an entire generation of men. The battlefield for Australians were lined with trenches filled with disease, pests and the fallen where they had medical aid. They experienced traumas not yet known commonly at all. The war was not embellished for its inhumanity in its time but as we see now the men and women who helped with the war effort lived with fear of death, disease and infection.

During World War One (WW1) various technological advances occurred and had a positive influence on warfare. People claim that the war was deadly due to the creation of new weapons and military tactics that were put into use. On June 1914, the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed with his wife by a Serbian secret group. This assassination changed the history of the XX century. Consequently, Austria-Hungary declared the war on Serbia before sending them an ultimatum. From this point on, a large series of events between countries occurred. Russia decided to attack Austria-Hungary to defend Serbia. At the same time, as Germany belonged to the Triple Alliance together with Austria-Hungary, they decided to declare the war on Russia. Due to the rivalry between France and Germany, the Germans declared the war on France by creating and following the Schlieffen plan, which their main objective was to invade France through Belgium (who was a neutral country during the war). World war 1 changed America economically, politically, and socially, but the widespread of disease hit the United States terribly. In 1918-1919, the World suffered a flu epidemic with no cure to prevent it from spread as well as taking the lives of many. When soldier came home from fighting in World war 1, they brought along with them the flu into the United States. Unfortunately the flu epidemic usually claimed the lives of healthy young adults stead of usually claiming the lives of young and the old.( Doc 6) The death toll around the globe was from 20-50 million dead including 550,000 American as well. Despite these negative impacts on the U.S, World war 1 caused the growth in employment in the U.S giving jobs to immigrants as well as Americans. The United States during the World war traded with other foreign countries around the world in order to gain supply cheaply and manufacture weapons and supplies to the American army, but even though this benefited the U.S, Labors went on strike. Labors went on strike due to the fact that Federal regulator had kept the workers wages low during the war to maximize their businesses so that they may thrive during the war.(Doc 8) Labors were very upset due to the fact that they expected that during wartime their wages would increase, this was their motive for going on strike.
